UNEMPLOYMENT BRIEFING September 2009

Introduction This is the April 2009 issue of the Economic Development Unit’s Unemployment Briefing. The Office of National Statistics releases unemployment data on its NOMIS website at monthly intervals (www.nomisweb.co.uk) and this briefing is produced using that data This report contains unemployment information for the month and presents this data for travel to work areas, local authorities, wards, counties, regions and nationally.

Travel to Work Area In September 2009, only two Travel to Work Areas (TTWA) experienced an increase in unemployment levels. These were Ipswich TTWA and Wisbech TTWA. Norwich TTWA experienced the largest numerical decrease with 231 claimants leaving the register whilst Haverhill & Sudbury experienced the largest percentage decrease of 5.0 percent. Great Yarmouth TTWA experienced a loss of 11 claimants, a percentage decrease of 0.3 percent. The unemployment rate for September was 5.5 percent of the working age population. The corresponding rate for twelve months ago was 3.8 percent of the working age population with 2187 claimants in the travel to work area.

Local Authority Areas Only one Norfolk authority experienced an increase in their unemployment figures which was South Norfolk who saw an increase of 19 claimants from the previous month. Breckland experienced the largest numerical and percentage decrease with 145 people leaving the register representing a fall of 5.6 percent from the previous month. Great Yarmouth saw no change in its unemployment figures, remaining at 3,046 claimants. This represents 5.6 percent of the working age population. This places the Borough in joint 37th position out of the 354 English authorities. The corresponding rate twelve months ago was 3.9 percent of the working age population placing Great Yarmouth in joint 20th position. Great Yarmouth’s share of Norfolk’s population has increased slightly this month to 17.5 percent, an increase from 17.1 percent last month. Twelve months ago, the share was 19.6 percent.

Ward Figures Eight of the seventeen wards experienced a decrease in the levels of unemployment with Central & Northgate and East Flegg experiencing the largest numerical fall with 13 people leaving the register. Fleggburgh experienced the largest percentage decrease with a change of -15.4 percent from the previous month. Of the nine wards that experienced an increase, Southtown & Cobholm saw an additional 19 new claimants whilst Magdalen saw an increase of 7.5 percent from the previous month. Nelson ward continues to have the highest unemployment rate with 13.4 percent of the working age population. Southtown & Cobholm ward has a rate of 10.4 percent and Central & Northgate ward has a rate of 9.8 percent.

County Figures Norfolk experienced a decrease in its unemployment levels during September 2009 with 457 people leaving the register. This represents a percentage fall of 2.6 percent from the previous month. Overall, the unemployment rate for the county was 3.2 percent of the working age population.

Regional Figures The Eastern region experienced a decrease of 1.3 percent from the previous month with 1631 people leaving the register. In total there were 119,263 claimants representing 3.5 percent of the working age population. Table 6 – Regional Government Office Region
