Unit 5 Force & Motion TTK Speed-distance traveled by an object in a given amount of time (S = D/T) Velocity- an object’s speed and direction Acceleration- change in an object’s speed or direction over time (speed up, slow down, take a corner) Friction- force that resists the motion of two surfaces that are touching each other Motion- change in position of an object Force- a push or a pull Newton- unit of force (N) Average Speed- total distance divided by total time Instantaneous Speed- speed of an object at a particular moment Gravity–force of attraction between objects because of their mass Net Force- combination of all forces acting on an object Newton’s Laws of Motion- describes the relationship between force and motion- named after a famous scientist- Sir Isaac Newton Balanced forces-total of all forces on an object equals zero and the object's motion does not change
Unbalanced forces – net forces on an object does not equal zero- results in object changing its motion
Displacement- straight line distance between starting & ending points or locations Inertia- an object at rest wants to stay at rest or an object in motion resists a change in speed or direction
