University of South Alabama Cheerleading & Mascot Spring 2017, Dear Athlete, We are excited to hear that you have chosen the University of South Alabama to further your education and cheerleading career. The cheerleading squad at South Alabama is a mixed coed/all-girl competitive squad. We cheer for football, men’s & women’s basketball, and volleyball games, as well as compete in the small coed division at the UCA College Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Florida and the D1A All Girl division at the NCA College Cheerleading Championship in Daytona, Florida. Here at the University of South Alabama we are committed to developing not only the athlete, but also the character and value of the person. Not only do we emphasize cheerleading, we also believe in, and support strong academics, school pride, community service, and the unity within the squad. Tryouts for the 2016-2017 team selections will be held April 21st-22nd, 2017 in the HPELS building on Jaguar Drive. To be eligible for tryouts, you must have applied to the University of South Alabama, or currently be enrolled as a student. Also, you must have all forms found in the tryout checklist, filled out and completed entirely, along with all medical documents including a physical signed by a physician. *You do not have to see a USA physician, but you must use all USA physical forms provided, as well as providing us with sickle cell screening results. Your current primary care physician may complete and sign all physical forms and a newborn screening for sickle cell is acceptable – there is no option to waive this requirement. Tryouts are a 2-day process followed by a mandatory team meeting for all selected members of the 2017-2018 cheer team. Friday, April 21st will include the following: cheer & dance instruction, tumbling evaluation, first cuts posted, and open practice. Friday’s cuts will be based primarily on tumbling and will be posted prior to open practice. Saturday, April 22nd will include 2-sessions. Session 1 will include cheer & dance review followed by cheer & dance evaluations. A 2nd cut based on cheer & dance evaluations will be made and posted prior to session 2. Session 2 will include open stunt around & warm-up followed by stunt evaluations. Personal interviews will be conducted throughout the tryout process made by appointment determined by coaching staff. Only the newly selected team members will report on SATURDAY, April 22nd at 4:30pm for a MANDATORY team meeting & uniform fitting. All tryout sessions & evaluations will be CLOSED to the PUBLIC. The final results will be posted Saturday afternoon around 4:30pm. All questions or concerns following the tryout process may be addressed no sooner than June 1st and made by appointment or email only.
