12U & 10U Player Development Initiative Objectives Why US Soccer’s Player Development Initiatives (PDIs)?

• Development over winning • Create environment for player success (individual v. team) • Player development uniformity across United States • Reduce advantage of strongest/fastest • Increase technical skills • Ball on the ground Changes Include No Punting in 12U and 10U Addition of Build Out Lines in 10U 2

12U & 10U Player Development Initiative No Punting, Drop Kicks or Half-Volleys Objective Promote play out of the back in less pressured setting; keep ball on the ground (decreased risk of concussions) • If a Goal Keeper intentionally performs a punt, Drop-kick or Half-volley an Indirect Free Kick (IFK) shall be awarded to the opposing team from the spot of the offence • If the offence occurs within the Goal Area (6 yard area) an IFK should be taken on the goal area line parallel to the goal line at the nearest point to where the infringement occurred

• Once opponents move out past the BOL the Goal Keeper will have 6 secs. to release the ball (not frequently called in 10U) • Ideally a Goal Keeper or player taking a Goal Kick will wait to put the ball into play once all opponents are past the Build Out Line however, the Goal Keeper or player can put the ball into play sooner but does so accepting the position of the opponents and the consequences of how play resumes (opponents may win the ball).

15

10U Player Development Initiative Build Out Line Goal Kicks : Distribution & Positioning Goal Kicks cannot be received by a teammate beyond their own BOL/“Defensive Third” (Goal Kick must still leave Penalty Area) • OK for Goal Kick to go to #11 #3 taking Goal Kick

• If ball does not leave Penalty Area or if ball is received by player #2 inside the Penalty Area the Goal Kick is retaken

• If ball is received by #5, #7, or #9 an Indirect Free Kick (IFK) will be awarded to the Blue team from the top of the Goal Area closest to where the Goal Kick was taken

10U Player Development Initiative Build Out Line Build Out Line FAQs 1) On free kicks in the defensive half, do opponents need to retreat behind the Build Out Line? No, not on free kicks, only for goal keeper possession and goal kicks 2) On free kicks in the defensive third, does the free kick need to be received inside their own Build Out Line (in Defensive Third)? No, not on free kicks, only for goal keeper possession and goal kicks 3) What if a ball strikes an opponent while they are retreating out of the Defensive Third? The ball is in play. 4) What is the call should a defender cross the Build Out Line too soon? The Goal Keeper or player taking the Goal Kick should be sure the opponent cannot cross the line before they play the ball. Play can be held up until opponents are back on the correct side of the build out line. To avoid constant early crossing of the BOL and to avoid the need for a possible misconduct being issued, referees should be diligent and watch for this type of play occurring and immediately blow the whistle (AR raising their flag; if this instruction is given by the referee) to stop play. The Referee should then talk to the offending player(s) as needed to discourage this type of play. If it continues then the coach needs to be asked to help control the situation.

Modifying Characters

(below are some instructions for Mac computers, may be similar on PC) How Players Are Designed & Modified Players were custom built in PowerPoint using several individual shapes (sleeves, stripes, socks, arms, hands, etc.) Some shapes are positioned at different angles such as the sleeves. The character sizes at left are the “Originals” before reduced to 25% (as shown in slides).

Player on the left has all shapes “grouped” (On a Mac when all shapes are highlighted select Arrange --> Group). Similar steps to “ungroup”

Player on the right has all shapes “ungrouped” and lines are added to the shapes for you to see them in this example

To Size – Make sure entire player is

grouped then on Mac right click and select Format Shape  Size. Then click box for “Lock aspect ratio” then change percentage – all characters in slides are reduced to 25%

Shapes are grouped – often in many smaller subgroupings first (such as just the two shoulder pieces then those sub-groups are grouped together. When entirely grouped the player to be resized as you wish and moved around without “falling apart”. Even when grouped you can make custom changes to the characters – left click a few times until the single shape you wish to color or move is highlighted. Stripes are just lines (top of sock, side of shorts) Note: the small triangle in the shorts is colored the same as any background to make the white short appear to be cut.

Building Teams Red Originals – “Manchester United” – Alt skin tones & GK 1)

2) 3) 4)

Blue Originals – “Chelsea” – Alt skin tones & GK

5)

TIPS Create all changes to a character kit first (don’t forget to change triangle in shorts to match the background the character will be placed on) Copy that character & change skin tones as desired (make one of each skin tone you want) Make your GK or other characters Group all characters together – copy the group and while the copies all grouped resize all at once (characters on slides are set at 25% of “Originals”) Move characters you will use to slide then make copies of them to as needed for your diagram Man U reduced to 25%

Chelsea reduced to 25%

AR: Back

(can place on “near side” facing field)

Flags Ungrouped flag to create your own style

Different positions – can rotate for desired angle as needed

1) 2) 3) 4)

TIPS Refer to all previous notes about the shapes and tips for character customization and size reduction Create all changes to an Original size ref first (don’t forget to change triangle in shorts to match the background the ref will be placed on) Create new refs for all positioning – flag up and down, showing card, etc. (Note shapes are rotated and moved for sleeve and arm and hand positioning). You can ungroup just the sleeve and arm (arm & hand grouped) pieces to move as you wish. Ungroup Ref to isolate Flag or Card to alter or change out. Recommend using Right click Format shape and then Rotation setting to get angle. You may wish to ungroup all shapes, set a subgroup of shapes to move forward than back by cutting and pasting then regroup all in the end
