National Swine Nutrition Guide Discussed yesterday New version 2.0 and metric version New feed library and new nutrient excretion module
NSRG • National Swine Reproduction Guide • Includes troubleshooting decision tree • Will be virtual only and available for computer, pad, phone, etc. using adaptive technology • Don Levis, chair • Working on decision trees by theme • Plans to beta test next Spring • Others helping: Baker, Safranski, Stalder, Singleton, Flowers, Knauer, Estienne, Young, Knox
SSO Swine Science Online 89 credits taken in Spring 25 credits this semester Need greater promotion among universities and industry • Student evaluations wide variance between instructors • 17 courses but will add a couple more • • • •
PSM & CSM • Professional Swine Manager and Certified Swine Manager • First course taught this semester at South Central CC in Mankato • 25 students • Two more courses taught in Spring • Soft launch of certification exam early next year • Joint with Pork Checkoff
New Grant • Received a $142,000 HEC grant for training of online instructors in both SSO and PSM • Greg Miller of ISU will lead training effort • First workshop to be held following Midwest ASAS meeting in Des Moines
USDA/NIFA CAP Grant • • • • • •
Climate Variability - $10 million over 5 years Our proposal includes 35 scientists and 15 sub awards 28 proposals submitted Narrowed to four including dairy, beef, swine & poultry Reverse site visit at USDA to present proposal Notification within next week or so
New Grant Opportunities • Considering a grant proposal on modeling due this Winter • Also considering an HEC proposal on online education for HS students in vo-ag

Deans’ Policy Council Meets in October • Annual meeting on October 12th in Kansas City • Debby Sheely of NIFA to speak • Many deans and dept heads of partner institutions attending
Strategic Assessment of USPCE • 36 interviews of stakeholders to assess programs and performance and to suggest directions for the future • Hale Group conducted study • Most notable: USPCE does not serve or benefit pork producers directly but rather serves land grant university swine programs • Need a new vision statement and objectives • Strongly supported Deans meeting, NSNG, SSO, etc. • USPCE Board will use to develop long term strategic plan
