UTRGV AT TEXAS THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2016 TEXAS HEAD COACH KAREN ASTON

Opening Statement: It’s always exciting to be part of a win that is historic. So the first thing I would say is that I’m happy that we got the win tonight, I’m happy it was the 500th in the Erwin Center and it just means a whole lot of special basketball has gone on here for a whole lot of years and we’re really proud to be a part of that. Second of all, first thing I would say is a lot of credit to Rio Grande. Larry is an old, old friend of mine and I’ve got a lot of respect for him and the journey he has through coaching, how serious he takes coaching the game of basketball and in particular women’s basketball. So I just want to see that I thought they played really well; they challenged us, they guarded them on the perimeter. We’ve had better days and the best thing I can say about the way we guarded tonight, we’ve just had better days. I thought that we took advantage of what was there for us offensively, in particular the first three quarters I thought that we were really good in transition, got the ball in the right places. Again, we just weren’t as good defensively as I expect our team to be, so I hope that we’re better on Saturday. On UT RGV coach Larry Tidwell mentoring her as a recruiter: Work. I had an understanding of work. When I got to Baylor were trying to jump start the program and Sonja had just taken the job and I was pretty much what you would call a GA at that time and I just wanted to learn everything that I could. The best thing Larry taught was just that he outworked people, all the time. If it meant 500 mail outs or a phone call to a high school coach every day, he was going to outwork people and he was a really good role model for early in my career. He works. It doesn’t matter where he is, he’s going to work.

TEXAS FRESHMAN GUARD/FORWARD JOYNER HOLMES

On what they have learned coming to college: I’ll piggyback off of what they said but as well as things like things are earned in practice, it’s not just based off of your talent. When you have a bad practice or you have a bad week of practice, you have to look forward to not starting or not playing many minutes. Also just playing play to play; that’s been the hardest thing since I’ve been here. Just going up and down the floor constantly. On not starting some games: Not so much because I knew it was coming. I just had to go into practice and work the following week. On what Tina teaches her: We do a lot of post moves, counters, and stuff like that. We work on my mentality and not getting down on myself when I do something wrong because that’s been one of my main issues right now.

TEXAS JUNIOR GUARD BROOKE MCCARTY

On what she has learned in college: I think it’s details and it’s a process. When you come to college, you might not think it’s different but it is. So it’s just trusting the process.

TEXAS FRESHMAN GUARD ALECIA SUTTON

On what she had to learn coming to college: I think the main thing is paying attention to details. In high school, we didn’t have to do that and coming here it’s another level. So paying attention to details and the most important thing is defending the ball with Coach Aston because she’s a very high defensive coach.

! UTRGV HEAD COACH LARRY TIDWELL

On the game: Congratulations to a very good Texas team. Karen Aston has done an incredible job from top to bottom. They're tough. They rebound good, they move the ball up and down the floor good. Officially, my favorite player, besides the ones on my team, my favorite player in the country is Kelsey Lang. I've followed her now; I guess we were here two years ago. The way that she works, the way that she runs the floor, the way she'll "D" up on you... I hope she has a fantastic year. I hope Texas has a fantastic year and I hope Kelsey Lang has an incredible year because that young lady is first class. On how Texas coach Karen Aston says she learned the recruiting ropes from him: Karen Aston is one of the best recruiters in the world. But we worked together for Sandra Hogue at Baylor for two years. I was fresh out of high school in Schulenburg, Texas. She was coming from Bologna, Arkansas. I was there three years before she got there. Because I was a high school coach, we always reached out to the high school coaches in Texas, particularly, and Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. We did a lot of good things with the coaches. We did a lot of good things with the coaches. We did coaching clinics and camps. I tell you, Karen Aston learned from one of the best in Sandra Hogue, then she worked for Coach [Jody] Conradt, I mean, that's two of the best people in the business you can work for. You learn a lot of different things. But learning from me, I guess one of the things, both of us were high school coaches and both of us are grinders, and we're going to work. It's 24/7, 365 when it comes to recruiting. And Karen Aston is a great recruiting, but also, she's a great coach. She won state championships in Arkansas. She knows how to play the game. I really like her offense, but compliments to her and her staff. Those guys are well-prepared. Knock on wood, I hope Texas wins them a Big 12 Championship. On how his team shoots a large number of threes: Yeah, when you have 6'4'', 6'5'' and whatever in there, swatting back at you, we knew that we could penetrate and kick out. We were 8 out of 20 in the first half. We've got to hit those because we're not physical enough inside yet. I've had a few injuries, I've had concussions, I've had a couple ACLs, I've had an Achilles tendon. I'm missing quite a few players, but we feel like we have a little advantage because if we're a little bit athletic, long shots, if we don't make them, equal long rebounds and we can chase down those rebounds.
