VARICON-D Metal detection system with conveyor  Devonvale Bakery, Honiton/England

 The Problem

Devonvale Bakery of Honiton, Devon produces hand-made individual cake portions for sale in convenience stores and other retail outlets all over England. Consumer protection and quality control are central to the company’s success. The cake slices contain numerous ingredients including sugar, fruits, chocolate and caramel; all of which may be a source of metal contamination. S+S through their English subsidiary S+S Inspection Ltd, supplied Devonvale Bakery with a VARICON-D, in-line metal detection system in July 2003.

 Challenge

• very little space between the packing and labelling machines to install a metal detection system

 Solution

To ensure the highest standards of quality are achieved the individual portions are checked for metal contamination at the end of the packing process. The location of metal detection systems at this point in production rules out the possibility of further metal contamination emanating from the processing operation. There was very little space between the packing and labelling machines to install a metal detection system. Consequently, Devonvale Bakery’s main criteria in identifying a suitable metal detector were reliability, a minimum metal-free zone and the shortest conveyor length. CONSENSE-D met all these requirements and was conveniently installed next to the labelling machine. If a metal contaminant is identified the conveyor stops and the affected product can be removed. In order to facilitate the removal of contaminated product S+S increased the length of the conveyor section after the metal deVARICON-CS-EN.doc S+S Separation and Sorting Technology GmbH Regener Str. 130 D-94513 Schönberg Germany Tel. +49(0)8554/308-0 Fax: +49(0)8554/2606 • e-mail: [email protected] Internet: www.se-so-tec.com

The CONSENSE-D metal detection system can easily be moved within the factory to be used at different locations and it offers an excellent price-performance ratio. The SENSITY control and evaluation system from S+S, normally used in relatively constant production conditions, is now equipped with serial interface and online logbook to provide a full record of the entire production process. It can be easily integrated into existing equipment and systems and is therefore particularly suitable for the food industry.

 The Result from a customer’s point of view

“S+S has delivered exactly what we wanted, and quickly too; the CONSENSE-D is an extremely reliable metal detector, it’s been tailor-made to fit into a very small space and of all the suppliers we considered S+S offered the best price-performance ratio. We had some very specific requirements and S+S has fulfilled them all; we needed guide rails on the conveyor, a longer conveyor section after the metal detector and locking castors on the frame to enable us to move it to different areas of the factory. Our quality standards are higher now than they’ve ever been, and our products now meet the requirements for sale in supermarkets“. (Quotation: Keith Upham, Director of Devonvale Bakery)
