Nick Faldo, winner of six Major championships and the all-time leading Ryder Cup points scorer, has taken his place among golf’s elite. His unstinting pursuit of excellence combined with unrivaled shot-making abilities have gained him a reputation as one of the greatest competitors the sport has ever produced. Already established as an internationally acclaimed golf course designer, Faldo has now unveiled his first U.S. design at Marriott’s Shadow Ridge Resort in Palm Desert, California. Set against the stunning backdrop of the snow-capped Santa Rosa Mountains, Faldo’s vast international experience and passion for strategic design are clearly in evidence at Marriott’s Shadow Ridge. “I wanted to create a golf course that looks different and plays differently from all other courses in the desert,” says the three-time Masters and three-time British Open champion. “I sought to design a course that not only tests a player’s skill, but also his imagination and character; I wanted to take resort golf to another level.” According to Faldo, his first U.S. design draws inspiration from the great sand-belt courses of Australia, notably Kingston Heath and Royal Melbourne. “Our fairways are typically generous but our bunkering style is impressively bold. The greens have plenty of subtle undulations and they reward and encourage a variety of approach shots. Miss the putting surfaces here and your ball will invariably roll into a tightly mown collection area or into a greenside bunker.”
