1 VISION STATEMENT BY ASSOCIATION OF POULTRY FARMERS AT THE BRONG AHAFO REGIONAL CONSULTATIVE FORUM ON THE LONGTERM NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN Presented by Cecilia Baafo Appiah Date: 12th October, 2015 Venue: Tyco City Hotel, Sunyani
Honourable Deputy Minister, Distinguished Guests, All protocols observed; I would like to speak in my local dialect so that I can fully express myself. My name is Cecilia Baafo Appiah. I am a poultry farmer and our major problem is that many people are backing out of the poultry business. This is because all our poultry feed and drugs for the business are imported. If we could manufacture all these in our country, it would help greatly by reducing our expenditure. These imported items make the management of the poultry business expensive and have kept many poultry farmers in debt and many have gone out of business. Secondly, broilers in Ghana are mostly imported as well, while in Nigeria, broilers are hardly imported. These imported fowls cannot be guaranteed in terms of its quality and safety for consumers. Because most of us do not have help from the government and other bodies, we are being forced to stick to the imported broilers. I hope that in the preparation of the long-term development plan, the government will consider putting in place policies that favour and help boost the poultry industry during the implementation period and beyond. If these few concerns I have raised are addressed adequately, jobs will be created for more citizens and the safety of fowls consumed in this country can be guaranteed. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share our problems and to present our vision for the preparation of the long-term development plan. Thank you.
