Our EDS volunteers are prepared to assist in any local emergency or disaster whenever 911 calls us to provide support. It came as no surprise when we were called to serve following the tornados that hit our area in late May. We were first deployed to the Beecher area where we stayed late into the night. The next day, Fenton Township Fire asked us to serve in the Thompson Road area. We stayed there until nearly 8:00PM. In the 24 hours following the tornados,
our volunteers gave 25+ volunteer hours. They served 110 meals, 449 drinks and 160 snacks. Did you know that our local EDS volunteers have the option to serve nationally? We currently have two volunteers on a list of people who have offered to serve in Oklahoma. The Salvation Army has been providing disaster relief there since the EF5 tornado hit in Moore on May 19. We will continue to provide relief services there indefinitely. Here’s a brief
accounting of just some of the services we’ve provided in that area. Services since May 19 77,802 meals 113,578 drinks 140,557 snacks Plus 1,000s of clean up and hygiene kits
Global Youth Service Day Project Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the world’s largest service event. In 2013, GYSD projects were held in 135 countries, as well as every state in our nation. In Genesee County, four projects took place. The Salvation Army of Genesee County was proud to be a part of one of those projects. We partnered
with the Powers Catholic High School Lacrosse team and Genesee Valley Center to host a mass food distribution on Friday, April 26. Genesee Valley Center provided the funding necessary for our distribution in a unique way. They donated the coins tossed into their fountain. We used that money to purchase food
from the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. The young men from Powers provided the energy and muscle. Before noon that Friday, students, staff and parents had distributed nearly four tons of food to 247 local families, comprised of 801 individuals.

Mission:Literacy The Dual Vision of Mission:Literacy
Help grow a child’s reading skills!
“But what is the use of preaching the Gospel to men whose whole attention is concentrated upon a mad, desperate struggle to keep themselves alive?” ~William Booth (Founder of The Salvation Army)
Mission: Literacy provides instruction that expands children’s reading skills while they discover the joy of reading God’s Word. It is a multicultural program using bible stories designed for struggling readers who are tutored in groups of no more than five children. The user-friendly Tutor’s
Handbook gives effective support to the nonprofessional reading tutor. Does Mission:Literacy sound like a project you’d like to help with? We are looking for two dedicated volunteers willing to help implement this literacy program during our Picnics in the Park (free summer lunch program). Picnics in the Park and
Mission:Literacy will take place at Memorial Park, located at the corner of 5th (Court St.) between Grand Traverse and Church Street, June 17 through August 16. Mission:Literacy will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-3PM. If you are interested in helping please call Marcia at 810-600-4497.
Our Feeding Programs William Booth said it so well, and his words are no less true today than when he spoke them. That’s why we remain committed to feeding the hungry today. Did you know that in the past year The Salvation Army of Genesee County... Provided more than 8,300 supplemental
food orders through our weekly food reclamation program. Served 2,624 meals via the Kids Café. Served 954 lunches last summer though Picnics in the Park. Fed 400 at our annual Thanksgiving Eve dinner.
Gave out 1,125 Christmas food boxes. Provided food to over 500 families via our mass food distributions. All these programs rely on volunteers like you. If you’ve been moved to help, call Marcia Heller at 810-600-4497.
Grandma’s Attic Sale Our Women’s Auxiliary will be hosting a Grandma’s Attic Garage Sale in the Citadel Corps gym (211 W. Kearsley) on Saturday, August 31. The sale

An Early Word About Christmas There’s no need to wait!! Believe it or not, here at The Salvation Army, we have already begun planning for Christmas. Lots of service clubs are not that different from us. When they return from summer vacations in September, many will start their new year
by filling up their club’s service calendar. If you belong to such a group, or you just want a particular day or kettle site for your family, it’s never too early to call our office and stake your claim. Many of our most popular sites and days fill up quickly. In fact, some folks reserve their spot up to 11
months in advance. If scheduling early would make your life easier, please don’t hesitate to call and let us know where and when you’d like to ring. Just give Marcia Heller a call at 810-600-4497. She’d be happy to help you set your ringing schedule.
