THE WATER LINE NEWS FROM PLAINFIELD, AUGUST 2013

Police Install Medication Drop Off Box at Police Station Plainfield residents now have a safe place to dispose of expired and unwanted medications. As of August 6, residents may bring medicines they no longer have a use for to the Plainfield Police Department headquarters, 1075 W. Main St., for disposal during normal business hours (MondayFriday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m). Prescription and over-the-counter medicines will be accepted. All medication should be kept in their original containers. Individuals may choose to black out or remove their personal information from the container labels, but all information pertaining to the drug itself should remain intact and readable.

No illicit drugs, syringes, lancets, needles or thermometers are accepted in the program. (Questions regarding the disposal of any of the above items may be directed to the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District at 858-6070 or HendricksSolidWaste.com.) This program is for use by consumers only; it is not intended for commercial use.

No personal information remaining on the containers will be used; strict privacy of any personal information will be maintained.

“This is a great program and service to provide to the Plainfield community,” said Plainfield Police Captain Jill Lees. “Now, residents will no longer have to drive to other areas of the county to drop off their unwanted medication or wait until the next event scheduled in Plainfield.”

The Unwanted Medication Drop Box program is made possible through the cooperation of the Plainfield Police Department, the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District, and the Hendricks County Substance Abuse Task Force. The box was provided to the Department by the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District.

Lenn Detwiler, Executive Director of the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District added, “For many years people have been told to simply flush away unwanted medication down the toilet to get rid of them. The problem with doing that is that the chemicals in those drugs are not removed by the wastewater treatment (continued)

process. Trace amounts of these drugs are ending up back in our water ways. This program provides a permanent, safe, and convenient option for residents to properly dispose of those medicines.”

Medication collected through the program will be sorted by type, and the quantities of certain types will be recorded as is required by current regulations. Ultimately, the drugs will be incinerated, which is the environmentally preferred disposal method for such materials.
