| Guidance News Upcoming Guidance Academic Planning & Preparation Events The Guidance Department adopted the Single Shepherd approach to school counseling. Each LaGuardia student has a single school counselor that serves as their point person for: • Academic Planning • Post‑Secondary Planning • Social & Emotional Development The Guidance Department is excited to implement many new initiatives to better serve our students. Our initial next steps include beginning a four‑year comprehensive educational framework so that students are better prepared for the college process rather than waiting until the Spring of their Junior year.
May 01‑31
Junior College Meetings: Don’t forget to sign up for your Junior college meeting with your guidance counselors. Meetings will continue until early June. Don’t wait; sign up now! These are general informational sessions to learn more about the college process, to ask questions, and to get clarity on everything. Sign‑up sheets are available outside each counselor’s office.

| Guidance News Next Step for Seniors CONGRATULATIONS for completing the incredible college application journey. The best is yet to come! Do not hesitate to talk to us about college life since that's our expertise! Here are some additional helpful college tips. COLLEGE DECISION TIME: By now most of you have made your final decisions and have submitted a deposit. Don’t forget to let the schools you are declining know of your decision in a timely fashion. Maintaining respectful communication is important since you might be applying to them in the future (maybe transfer or graduate school), plus your behavior reflects LaGuardia HS so make us proud! Please update your Naviance account. Indicate in Naviance whether you have been accepted, waitlisted, denied, withdrew your application, etc. Also complete the “college I am attending” box. The information in Naviance is only as useful as the results that are entered into the program. Please take the time once more to log onto Naviance and complete results for each college on your list. REQUESTING AP CREDIT: Good luck on your AP exams! Colleges have varying policies on granting college credit using AP courses. Now that you have selected a college, become familiar with your college’s AP policy. Typically, this is NOT handled by the admissions office, rather the advising center or your academic advisor. You can check online or in the school catalog for more AP credit policy information. Your AP grades will be available in July online. Students are responsible for sending their official AP scores to colleges. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the College Board AP services at (888) 225‑5427 or www.collegeboard.org/apstudents . MONEY TALKS: Now that your college decision is done (yipeee!) the paperwork is just beginning. For starters, be prepared financially. ● DEPOSITS: The most critical piece is that you submitted your admission commitment fee. However, you may be asked to put a deposit down on other services like housing or orientation, etc. ● STUDENT SERVICES: You will be contacted soon regarding housing, orientation, meal plan, health programs, disability services, and student activities. Most of these programs have varying costs depending on your choices. All this will be combined with your tuition costs into your first semester bill. ● TUITION PAYMENTS: Most schools combine all the services and tuition into one bill, and send them out by semester or quarterly. Call your financial aid office to determine when you will receive your first bill (typically August with a September due date) so you can plan accordingly. Also, most schools offer payment plans, so ask them about one. ● LOANS: If you accept a student loan as part of your financial aid, package, you will probably need to fill out an application form and undergo a loan interview so make time for that. Federal loans applications for the 2018‑19 years are not available until June; Stafford and Parent Plus loans should be the first place to start. We recommend you do it at least one month before your first college bill is due so that your money will be dispersed on time. On the other hand, private loans are available any time, but are costly. ● CHANGES: If there any extreme changes in your family or if you have even simple questions, do not hesitate to contact your financial aid office. They are there to serve and guide you! COLLEGE PREP: ● FORMS: You will be inundated with different forms regarding housing, orientation, meal plan, health programs, disability services, and student activities. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask the various offices with your questions.
5
● ● ● ● ●
PHYSICAL: You will probably need to get a physical, so call and find out if there are any specific forms you need to fill out. DISABILITY/Instructional Support Services: Find out how to get your accommodations in place. Most schools will need all your documentation to evaluate your application. ORIENTATION : Don’t forget to sign up for orientation. This is a great way to meet your future classmates and administrators, and even sign up for class! THANK YOUs : This is a good time to send notes thanking all the people who helped you with your applications. READING: Take a look at some of the popular books on getting ready for college listed below for students and parents.
SUGGESTED READING for PARENTS : ● When Your Kid Goes to College; A Parent's Survival Guide (Carol Barkin, 1999) ● Letting Go (5th Ed): A Parents' Guide to Understanding the College Years (Karen Levin Coburn, 2009) ● You're On Your Own (But I'm Here If You Need Me): Mentoring Your Child During the College Years (Marjorie Savage, 2009) ● I'll Miss You Too: An Off‑to‑College Guide for Parents and Students ( Margo Woodacre Bane & Steffany Bane, 2006) ● What to Expect When Your Child Leaves for College: A Complete Guide for Parents Only (Mary Spohn, 2008) SUGGESTED READING for STUDENTS: ● The Freshman Survival Guide: Soulful Advice for Studying, Socializing, and Everything In Between ( Nora Bradbury‑Haehl , 2011) ● 1001 Things Every College Student Needs to Know: Like Buying Your Books before Exams Start ( Harry Harrison , 2008) ● The Everything College Survival Book: All You Need to Get the Most out of College Life ( Susan Fitzgerald & J. Lee Peters , 2011) (Both former College administrators) ● College 101: A Girl's Guide to Freshman Year ( Julie Zeilinger , 2014) (Barnard College Class of ‘15) ● Stuff Every College Student Should Know ( Blair Thornburgh , 2014)

| Guidance News CONGRATULATIONS!!
Class of 2018 Posse Scholar
Emilia Ciotti Hernandez, Technical Theater Lawrence University, ‘22 Posse’s Mission The Posse Foundation identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. The Foundation extends to these students the opportunity to pursue personal and academic excellence by placing them in supportive, multicultural teams—Posses—of 10 students. The Foundation’s partner universities and colleges award Posse Scholars four‑year, full‑tuition leadership scholarships.
So, what is a posse scholar? Posse scholars ... ... Are leaders in their high schools and communities ... Are committed to their education and demonstrate academic potential ... Are interested in teamwork and diversity ... Are positive, motivated, talented, ambitious young people..
What is Posse looking for? Posse is looking for individuals who have demonstrated leadership ability, communication and team building skills. High school grade point average and SAT scores are considered but are not solely the basis for selection. Posse looks for students who have done well academically, but who may not be considering (or might be missed by) some of the top universities (which often rely more heavily upon traditional admissions measures such as SAT scores). Winners of the Posse Scholarship have been positive contributors to their schools and communities. They are interested in issues of community and diversity. We are looking for the students who have the perseverance and drive to make it in a highly competitive academic environment if given the support of a positive team of peers, a Posse.
7
| Guidance News All nominees must: 1. Be high school seniors in the Fall of 2018. 2. Demonstrate extraordinary leadership within their high school, community, or family. 3. Excel academically and have strong GPAs. Although there is no minimum requirement, only nominees who have consistently progressed toward academic excellence will be given the opportunity to be a Posse Scholar. While the ACT or SAT are not a focus of Posse’s evaluation, students should take them. 4. The Posse program is open to students of all backgrounds.
Who pays for the scholarship? Each Posse Scholar receives a four‑year, full‑tuition leadership scholarship provided by the college and university partners listed below: Babson College Brandeis University DePauw University Dickinson College Franklin & Marshall College Lafayette College Lawrence University Middlebury College Smith College Trinity College University of Wisconsin‑Madison Vanderbilt University Wheaton College How can I request to be nominated? Juniors, do you have what it takes to be a Posse Scholar?? LaGuardia has 12 nomination slots available. If you would like to be considered for nomination, you must

| Academic Support 504 Update: Please note that the 504 committee is no longer reviewing 504 applications for this school year (2017‑2018) as the final day to submit an application was May 18, 2018. If you are interested in applying or re‑applying for accommodations for the 2018‑2019 school year, the committee will begin accepting those forms in September. A new application must be submitted for each school year. The application materials for the 2018‑2019 school year are now available on the Department of Education website under Office of School Health. Summer School: It is important that every effort be made to support each student in the successful and timely completion of their high school diploma requirements. To this end, students have been offered a variety of support interventions throughout the school year, including specialized school‑day programming, tutoring and when necessary PM school. However, some students may still need additional academic intervention services. Please be advised that if necessary, students who do not meet the appropriate academic benchmarks by the end of the spring term will be programmed for Summer School when possible. If you have any concerns or questions please feel free to reach out to your student’s guidance counselor. Summer School 2018 will be offered on site at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School from July 5 – August 15 from 8:00am – 2:00pm. Guidance Counselors {Music Students with last names A‑E} Erica Blum,

| Health Services/Section 504 Accommodations The Office of School Health manages the processes surrounding students needing medication administration, medically‑prescribed treatment, and other Section 504 and Individualized Education Program (IEP) services. Several health forms are used in the New York City public schools. Using these forms helps assure that children get the care, services, and accommodations they need during the school day. The following forms can be downloaded, completed by parent/guardian and physician/health care provider, and submitted to the nurses’ office. Forms must be printed and completed by hand, not online. School Year 20182019 Forms Note: your child's healthcare provider must complete forms for the 20182019 school year for services that need to be carried for the next school year AFTER June 1, 2018. Please submit forms by July 15, 2018. Forms submitted after this date may have delays in processing. [email protected]. Please email nomination forms by Friday, June 1; however, nomination forms will also be accepted from the floor on the night of the election. The election will take place at the general PA meeting on Monday, June 4 at 7pm. The only qualification to run for office is that you be a parent of a child currently attending our school (however, as per the Chancellor's regulations, DOE employees are not allowed to run, even if they have a child in the school). We have many graduating parents and there is always room for parent volunteers who want to get involved in our school‑‑‑please consider nominating yourself for one of the many board positions. These are the school‑wide PA positions ONLY. Each studio will hold their own elections on June 4, the same night as the General PA meeting. You'll hear more about that from your studio reps soon. Please contact Dawn Moore, a member of the Nominating Committee, at
[email protected] with any questions.
