GIVE IT AWAY Nehemiah 5:14-19; 7:1-73
Sustain success…“build influence” …And they had nothing to say in their defense. Nehemiah 5:8
● Reverence for God and commitment to the vision
What if it works? …the wall was finished–just fifty-two days after we had begun. Nehemiah 6:15 He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and expand my territory!...” 1 Chronicles 4:10
Beware of the dangers of success ● Privileges and perks For the entire twelve years that I was governor of Judah…neither I nor my officials drew on our official food allowance. Nehemiah 5:14
● Integrity drift…entitlement The former governors, in contrast, had laid heavy burdens on the people, demanding a daily ration of food and wine, besides forty pieces of silver. Even their assistants took advantage of the people... Nehemiah 5:15
● Distraction I asked for nothing, even though I regularly fed 150 Jewish officials at my table, besides all the visitors from other lands! The provisions I paid for each day included one ox, six choice sheep or goats, and a large number of poultry. And every ten days we needed a large supply of all kinds of wine... Nehemiah 5:17-18
● Using people…it’s for me …Yet I refused to claim the governor's food allowance because the people already carried a heavy burden. Nehemiah 5:18
Cost: the loss of influence...“moral authority” “alignment between what you say…what you do” “belief…behavior”
…But because I feared God, I did not act that way. I also devoted myself to working on the wall and refused to acquire any land…Remember, O my God, all that I have done for these people, and bless me for it. Nehemiah 5:15,16,19
● Character For the entire twelve years that I was governor of Judah…neither I nor my officials drew on our official food allowance. The former governors… But because I feared God, I did not act that way. I also devoted myself to working on the wall and refused to acquire any land… Nehemiah 5:14-16
● Sacrifice…blessing through me…for them …Yet I refused to claim the governor's food allowance because the people already carried a heavy burden. Nehemiah 5:18
● Time…persistence For the entire twelve years that I was governor of Judah... Nehemiah 5:14
Zaccheus: “Actions speak louder than words”
Be intentional, leave a legacy…it’s about people ● Empower…give away influence After the wall was finished…the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed. I gave the responsibility of governing…faithful who feared God… Nehemiah 7:1-2
● Inspire people to see the spiritual opportunities Courage…service…generosity
Nehemiah 7:4-73
