What a warm winter! Please remember to have students bring clothing to match the weather. If we do get snow, we will still go outside for DPA and recesses. We’ve had a busy January and are now starting our new units. Here is what the students will be learning in class this month. Language and Social Studies We are focusing on ancient history until March Break. We will be learning how to use point form for research notes, and learning how to find information for their research topics. Grade 4s will do an independent research on an ancient civilization from around the world, and Grade 5s will research a First Nations tribe from Eastern Canada, focussing as far back in time as they can find. All work and writing for these projects will be completed at school, but students are encouraged to look at resources online or at the library to build their knowledge about ancient life. All students have chosen their civilisation. They are studying food (and water), homes, and clothing, then they choose their own topics for the rest of the project. Math We are moving into a difficult topic, long division. Please have your child work on their math facts to 9+9, 189, 9x9 and 81÷9 to help them become quicker and more accurate. This is another difficult unit, so students will likely need extra practice at home to learn how to divide correctly. Please see the math note on the back about long division. It lists the things students often struggle with in this topic and some tricks to help. The students know that I will help them any recess that I don’t have checkers club or duty, so if they are struggling, they should come ask me for help. Feel free to write me a note in the agenda if they are ever struggling with a topic or with the homework, and I will help them. Class Party! We will have our class party next Friday. Here is a list of names for Valentines cards. Please ensure that all students are included when your child is writing their Valentines cards. We have 21 students in all: Benjamin, Noah, Malcolm, Ben, Katarina, Emilia J, Kerron, Victor, Angeli, Dorian, Preston, Kaia, Emilia D, Bobby, Elizabeth, Jade, Caydence, Caitlyn, Mitchell, Jake, Tyler
