Who we are: The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) • WPSD is a non‐profit, tuition‐free school. • WPSD was founded in 1869. • WPSD provides academic and extracurricular programs to Deaf and Hard of Hearing children from birth through twelfth grade. • There are 170 students.

WPSD
• WPSD provides residential services Sundays through Friday mornings for 34% of the students. • All students that are served at WPSD have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). • We provide services to children from 54 counties across Pennsylvania.
Communication at WPSD • WPSD is an all‐inclusive communication environment that meets the needs of the individual student. • Different communication modes are used. • American Sign Language, Signed Supported English and Spoken English are all incorporated to promote the academic, social, emotional and physical development of our students.

SWPBIS at WPSD • Established a formal system of SWPBIS this year. • Pre‐K through 12th + years, including a dormitory program. • A Character Education Program (HEROES) and a Positive Behavior Program (ROARS‐Ready, Organized, Accountable, Respect, Safe) were already in existence. • Interventions and strategies to address bullying occurred (ex. Video created by students)
SWPBIS at WPSD • Met with SWPBIS trainer last year and throughout the summer. • SWPBIS Core Team meetings • Department Core Team meetings with staff • Core Team and staff developed Expectations Rubrics. • Positive acknowledgement systems for each department were established. These included: Different rewards, praise Parent/Guardian notification of positive behaviors Public postings/acknowledgment

Children’s Center (Pre‐K through K) • Rubric developed. • Teaching basic rules, i.e. manners, meal time behaviors, walking in line • Pompom reward system • Paw print with stickers • Establishes a foundation for the future (at other grade levels and in other environments).
Elementary School (1st through 4th) • Rubric developed. • Ticket system • Daily rewards • End of the week certificate • Student of the Month • Good workers

Middle School (5th through 8th) • Rubric developed • Ticket system‐3 teachers give out 3 tickets per week • Weekly drawing for rewards • Scratch off tickets for additional rewards • Encouragement for teachers, i.e. weekly chocolate given when tickets are given out.

High School (9th through 12th) • Rubric developed • Ticket system‐5 teachers give out 3 tickets per week • Scratch off tickets as additional rewards • 9 week drawing for bigger rewards • Individual classroom motivation systems • Encouragement for teachers, i.e. 9 week drawing‐ student receives rewards and teacher who nominated receives reward

Positive Results of SWPBIS • Starting at an early age sets up the foundation for the future. • Extrinsic rewards become more intrinsic. • The number of incident reports has decreased. • There have been fewer issues in the areas that are focused on, i.e. hallway. • Students are on time for class.
