“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” ― Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
Why is reading so important? Improves your basic grammar, spelling and writing skills and therefore improves your progress across all subjects; Gives you a better and broader vocabulary; Gives you self-confidence as a reader; Improves your general knowledge;
Helps you gain a better understanding of different cultures; Helps you to empathise and gives you greater insights into human nature and decision-making.
As a parent, what can I do to help? Make sure that your child has access to a range of high quality, age-appropriate books / reading material to read at home and at school; Ask to have a look at your child’s Reading Passport on a regular basis and ask them questions about the books they are currently reading: Who are the main characters? How does the writer keep the reader hooked? Are there any surprising twists or turns in the narrative? What themes does the book deal with? Encourage good reading habits at home! Imagine what a difference could be made if children dedicated just 20 minutes to reading every evening.
I’d like to help the school with its reading challenges, how could I lend my support? By donating to our Book Fund! Setting up a simple Standing Order – from as little as £1 to £5 a month – or whatever amount you can afford – could help us make a huge difference. With the generosity of Whickham parents over the last few years, we’ve been able to buy new books for our library and run exciting projects with our primary school partners, such as the summer reading challenge that your child participated in this year. Setting up a standing order is easy: simply give the following details to your bank (this can often be done via telephone or online banking): Account Name:
