WHY USPCE? Presentation to Ag Educators September 24th, 2010
Why have a USPCE??? • It is a shared financial venture between the industry and the land grant university system. Last year, the pork industry (NPB, NPPC, & states) contributed $165K. This was matched by 25 land grant universities. • This partnership along with USDA/ARS and NIFA provides the opportunity to work on the areas of greatest importance to the pork industry and minimizing the duplication of effort.
Why have a USPCE (cont.)?? • The USPCE allows the 25 colleges of agriculture to achieve a new level of partnership to better serve pork producers throughout the nation. Increased efficiency and synergy has been achieved at a time when universities have been struggling with severe budget reductions. Faculty have been brought together to work on many of the programs I will highlight here today. • The USPCE brings increased visibility to the pork industry.

Swine Science Online • Several academic associate deans, department heads and faculty developed the Swine Science Online program with 16 teaching faculty developing curricula for the program. • This will enable students at universities that do not have the expertise or sufficient numbers to teach swine production coursework to gain this information and better prepare them to be professionals in the field.

Lastly… • At our Annual Deans’ Policy Council meeting last week, we decided that we need to go after some sizable funds for swine research in the next Farm Bill. We will be working with APLU, NPPC, and the Deans to begin this process.
