elcome to Wilgus State Park. Colonel and Mrs. William Wilgus gave this property to the State of Vermont in 1933 for the creation of Wilgus State Park. Colonel Wilgus, born in 1865, was an internationally famous civil engineer whose brilliant career paralleled the development of modern transportation. Colonel Wilgus’ achievements include appointment as Director of Military Railways and Deputy Director of General Transportation in the American Expeditionary Force, resulting in a commendation from General Pershing and receipt of the Distinguished Service Medal; he conceived prefabricated sections of double-track tunnel which created the Detroit River Tunnel; he was the author of many technical papers and volumes and received many awards during his 46 years of active public life. The original park was constructed in the early 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, a federal public works program created during the Great Depression to provide jobs and training for thousands of unemployed Americans. At that time the park consisted of a picnic area with large flue-type stone fireplaces, picnic tables and the ranger’s quarters. The campground was developed and expanded between 1960 and the present time. Wilgus State Park is a very popular park for paddlers, being the only developed state park on the Vermont shores of the Connecticut River. The park offers an excellent chance to stop over on a river trip, or the opportunity to stay and explore the river and nearby Mt. Ascutney on day trips.
