For Holly and Bradley

4

There was once a Little Bird who lived high up in a nest in an old oak tree.

5

But Little Bird was lonely and wished that he had a friend to play with.

6

‘Will you play with me?’ Little Bird asked the Sleepy Owl.

7

The Sleepy Owl snored, ‘No Little Bird, I must sleep until the Moon rises tonight.’

8

And so the Little Bird flew on.

9

‘Will you play with me?’ Little Bird asked the Old Squirrel.

10

The Old Squirrel squeaked, ‘No Little Bird, I must collect enough food for next winter.’

11

And so the Little Bird flew on.

12

‘Will you play with me?’ Little Bird asked the Little Cow.

13

‘No Little Bird, I must eat lots of grass to grow big and strong.’

14

Poor Little Bird sat on the fence and cried tears of sadness. Nobody wanted to play with him!

15

Suddenly, a Small Sparrow sat next to him. ‘Hello, will you play with me?’ asked the Small Sparrow.

16

Little Bird jumped with joy. ‘Yes!’ Little Bird cried. And into the sky they swooped.

17

They skipped. They danced. They sang.

18

But when the stars twinkled in the sky and when the moon smiled down over the tree tops, the two little birds stopped playing.

19

‘Good-night, Little Bird,’ said Small Sparrow,’ it is time to sleep now.’ ‘Good-night, Small Sparrow,’ said Little Bird, ‘I will see you again tomorrow.’ And the two little birds flew back to their nests.

20

Mummy Bird and Daddy Bird tucked Little Bird snugly into his little bed and gave him a good-night kiss.

21

Little Bird smiled as he slept, happy to know that he had finally found a friend to play with.
