What is evangelism? What is the evangelistic task? What are the barriers in evangelism? What is apologetics? What is the ROLE of apologetics in evangelism? What are the limits of apologetics?
Evangelism can be described by combining these two ideas: “The Spirit-led communication of the gospel of the kingdom in such a way or ways that the recipients have a valid opportunity to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and become responsible members of His Church.” - Trent C. Butler, Holman Bible Dictionary (Nashville, Tennessee: Holman Bible Publishers, 1991), 447.
“…But evangelism itself is the proclamation of the historical, biblical Christ as Savior and Lord, with a view to persuading people to come to him personally and be reconciled to God.” - The Lausanne Covenant, http://www.lausanne.org/en/documents/lausanne-covenant.html (accessed October 19, 2011)
1. To clearly proclaim the message of the “Good News” – i.e. the Gospel “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel – which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ” – Galatians 1:6-7
2. To persuade hearers of the truth of the message “I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at
His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching…” - 2 Tim. 4:1-2
“Evangelism done properly will awaken a sense of need within the hearer, and more importantly, evangelism done persuasively will show what if Christianity is true, it will provide an answer to that need.” - “Forward”, Ravi Zacharias in, Norman Geisler and David Geisler, Conversational Evangelism (Eugene, Oregon: Harvest House Publishers, 2009), 10.
A subtle but common mistake is not understanding this balance between proclaiming the message and persuasion of the truth of the message.

Apologetics – Apologetics is the discipline that deals with a rational defense of Christian faith. It comes from the Greek word apologia which means to give a reason or defense. - Geisler, N. L. 1999. Baker encyclopedia of Christian apologetics. Baker reference library. Baker Books: Grand Rapids, Mich.
“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer (apologia) to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15) “The question isn’t “Should I do apologetics?”, we all do apologetics. The real question is what reasons or defense (apologia) am I using, and how effectively am I communicating it?”
Apologetics is used for “pre-evangelism” (Francis Schaeffer) We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ - 2 Corinthians 10:5
Apologetics is bridge building Apologetics is a science & an art
Misconceptions: • Apologetics is irrelevant to daily life
• Apologetics is about arguing, and arguing is divisive • Apologetics is to hard to get your arms around or only for the well educated • Apologetics is only about reaching the head
Couple of things to remember: Your relationship with the Living God is much more than “head knowledge” but, it is not less than that “head knowledge”. Your relationship with the Living God is much more than “experience”, but it is not less than that “experience”.

What is the real barrier keeping people from Christ? How can I help them overcome this barrier?
• God uses people (the church) to reach the world with the Gospel (Good News). “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God” – 2 Cor. 5:20
• There are some things that we can do, and there are some things that only God can do.
• Apologetics is not a replacement for evangelism, rather it is an essential partner to evangelism. 1 Cor. 15
• Apologetics cannot provide all answers to all things – remember there must be a movement of the will. “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.” - 2 Peter 2:1
