Wilmington Hammerheads Youth Coach,

Thank you for volunteering your time and service to the club and we hope this manual can serve as a guide for your upcoming season(s). Our goal of the club is to generate technical players who grow a passion for the game, as they get older. Within these pages is the framework for our player development model for players aged 3 – 18 years old. The Wilmington Hammerheads Organization is the only club in the Southeast region of North Carolina that can offer a player developmental model that extends from Recreation to PDL levels. I hope you can take a moment and acknowledge how fortunate we are to have coaching resources available to us that can create more technically diverse, tactically aware, physically present, and socially adjusted players to today’s game. Together with your help we can nurture our players in a fun, positive, safe, soccer environment that instills confidence in their abilities. You are the foundation of the Wilmington Hammerheads Youth, and we will do our part to support your efforts this season both on and off the field.

Thank you,

Dani Pittman

AGE GROUP GUIDELINES Recreation Uniform Guide Blue is HOME. Silver is AWAY. U4 Division The emphasis in the U4 Division is maximizing play and touches on the ball. Free play is encouraged. Throw-ins, goal kicks, and corner kicks are deemphasized. Please encourage parents to border the field in an effort to keep the ball in bounds and allow the play to continue. 4-6 minute quarters. Play is encouraged to continue if the kids are enjoying the game. No scores or standings are kept, nor forfeits. The minimum required players (3) must be present for the match to start. Three players on the field. No Goalkeeper. Parent/Coach facilitators are allowed on the field to assist the players during the games.

Training & Free Clinics: It is recommended to have 1 training session a week prior to the start of your Saturday morning games. The Wilmington Hammerheads Youth Staff will hold seasonal clinics for the U4 age group on select evenings through the season. The goal of the clinics is providing players an opportunity for soccer- filled fun outside of their Saturday scheduled games.

HOW TO CONDUCT A PARENT MEETING: It is extremely important to conduct a parent meeting prior to or at the start of the season. This will give you the opportunity as a coach to outline your thoughts, plans and philosophy. You can conduct this meeting at the first training session of the year or during a special dedicated time, day and place prior to the season. Starting a season without a parent meeting will result in communication misunderstandings by parents and coaches. You need to cover at least the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Why are you coaching? What is your background in soccer? (You don’t necessarily need one) What do you try to accomplish this season? What days, times and where does the team train? When and where does the team play its games? Who wants to be the team parent? (The team parent sends out emails regarding directions, cancelations, snack schedule etc.) 7. Player and parent rules 8. Hand out contact information 9. Any questions/concerns parents might have can be asked at this time
