PIECING 1. Transfer pattern to each square of freezer paper, centering motif, using the fine tip permanent marker. Mark with arrows showing the stitching path. 2. For each block, layer two contrasting squares of fabric right sides up. Layer randomly or as shown (Dia 1). 3. Place freezer paper on top of stacks and press. Use a dry iron and only as much heat as necessary to secure. Pin if necessary.

Press all fabrics with a dry iron. It is also helpful to use a pressing cloth to protect your fabrics.

4. Sew through paper directly on the drawn line. Use a small (short) stitch length. Use a needle down position on your machine to help pivot at the corners.

Use a ¼" seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise noted.

5. Remove freezer paper. Tug gently so you do not break threads.

Place fabrics right sides together when piecing. (RST means “right sides together”.)

6. Carefully cut away approximately 1∕8" inside stitched line to reveal bottom fabric (Dia. 2). Tip: To start the hole, use a seam ripper. Short, sharp embroidery scissors or appliqué scissors are suggested for cutting.

7. Sew a 2" x 7" rectangle to one side of each square (Dia. 3). Choose rectangles randomly or as shown in Diagram 1. Press toward rectangle.

8. Sew a 2" x 8 ½" rectangle to adjacent side of each square (Dia. 4). Each block should measure 8 ½" x 8 ½" square. 9. Arrange blocks in four rows of four blocks (Dia 5). Check placement of rectangle borders. Sew into rows, pressing seams in each row in opposite directions to match intersections. Each row will measure 32 ½".

Dia. 5

10. Sew rows together, matching intersections, raw edges and ends. Quilt should measure 32 ½" x 32 ½" square.

QUILTING 11. Press backing and pieced top well. 12. On a firm surface, layer backing right side down, then center the batting and the pieced top with right side up. Baste layers together with small safety pins or by hand basting, working from the center out to the edges. 13. Hand or machine quilt the layers together. Tip: Use the walking/ even-feed foot for machine quilting. 14. Trim excess batting and backing even with the quilt top when quilting is complete.

FINISHING 15. Sew the three 2 ¼" x wof binding strips with short ends together in a long continuous strip. Press in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. 16. Fold one short end diagonally and cut on fold. Press ¼" to the wrong side to finish the end. Leaving a 5" tail unsewn, align raw edges of binding with raw edges of quilt; pin. Stitch binding, folding in a miter at each corner. To finish sewing the binding, overlap ends 1" and trim if needed. 17. Turn folded edge of binding to the back side, enclosing the raw edges of the quilt. Pin in place and sew the folded edge down to complete binding.
