GOLF GLOSSARY

Do you have some questions about golf terminology?

Here is a brief golf glossary of some of the formats and terms used in and relating to MGA events.

AGE ELIGIBILITY

NET SCORE

JUNIOR: For ages up to 18 years old. MID-AMATEUR: For ages 25 years old & up. SENIOR: For ages 50 years old & up.

ALTERNATE SHOT

Two-person team format where both players alternate shots using the same ball. On each hole, both players on a team hit their own drives then choose the best shot to start alternating from until the ball is in the hole.

FLIGHTS

A “flight” is a division or grouping of golfers within an event who are competing against one another rather than against the entire field of golfers. The flight groups can be based on gender, age, USGA Handicap Index or any other criteria to help group players for a fair competition.

FOUR-BALL

Two-person team format with each player playing her own ball. On each hole, the lower score of the two partners is the team’s score for the hole.

GROSS SCORE

A gross score is the actual number of strokes you make on a hole or in a round.

MATCH PLAY

A player and opponent play an 18-hole match against each other based on holes won, lost or tied. The player who completes the hole in fewer strokes wins the hole. If the players have the same score, the hole is halved (tied). When a player leads her opponent by more holes than remain to be played, she wins the match. If a match is tied after the 18th hole, the match is extended one hole at a time until there is a winner. The winner moves on to play another match.

Contact Amy

A net score is a gross score minus any handicap strokes. For example: A golfer with a course handicap of 8 shoots a gross score of 90. 90 minus 8 = a net score of 82

SCRAMBLE

Two-person team format. On each hole, both players tee off, then the team members choose the best shot, and both team members play the second shot from that location and again choose the best shot. Play continues in this manner until the hole is completed.

SIX/SIX/SIX

18-hole round of golf with six holes of scramble, six holes of alternate shot and six holes of four-ball.

STABLEFORD

In a Stableford competition, you earn points based on your score on each hole. For example: A birdie may be worth 3 points, a par 2 points, a bogey 1 point, a double bogey 0 points. Your total score for a Stableford event is the total points you earn rather than the number of strokes you take. The player with the most points is the winner.

STROKE PLAY

In stroke play, a golfer counts the strokes taken to complete the play of each hole then adds up the total number of those strokes for all holes for a total score.
