Falcons on the Way to San Jose for MPSF Meet SPU gymnasts clash with conference rivals 6 p.m. Saturday at San Jose State Saturday, March 18 –– SPU at Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships The Event Center / San Jose, Calif. / 6:00 p.m. PDT • Webcast: https://livestream.com/sanjosestate/events/7131237 • Live Scoring: http://www.sjsuspartans.com/livestats/w-gym/mpsf_champs_17.htm
Seeking to stretch the momentum of a season-high score (194.100) in their regularseason finalé, the Seattle Pacific gymnasts vault into the postseason when they compete on Saturday, March 18 in the high-caliber Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships. The 16th-annual conference meet will be contested at The Event Center in San Jose, Calif. The six-team event starts at 6 p.m. Pacific Time and will determine the team and individual conference champions. The lone NCAA Division II team in the MSPF, SPU will be joined by host San Jose State, Alaska Anchorage, Air Force, Sacramento State and UC Davis. The Falcons registered their top-four team scores during the last four meets. The Field: The 2017 MPSF Championships figure to be a tightly contested competition. Sacramento State and San Jose State returned in 2014 to form a six-team league for the first time since 2005. Sacramento won the 2016 title, dethroning 2015 winner, UC Davis. SPU is the only Division II competitor in the field. The Falcons have a season-high score of 194.10 and are listed 65th in the overall NCAA rankings that are dominated by Division I schools. Joining the Falcons on Saturday will be 40th-ranked UC Davis (high score of 195.775), No. 47 Sacramento State (195.550) and host San Jose State (195.200), listed 49th. Also competing will be Air Force (No. 57 / 194.500) and Alaska Anchorage (No. 69 / 192.700). SPU was the MPSF runner-up in five of the last nine years after winning backto-back conference crowns in 2006 and 2007. SPU finished fourth last season. About the MPSF: The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation was established in 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pac-12, Mountain West and Western Athletic conferences along with other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championship competition for intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation. Since its inception, MPSF members have collected 87 NCAA team championships.
Gym Shorts: Falcons junior Ariana Harger sets out to defend her 2016 MPSF balance beam title. She finished in a three-way tie for first on that apparatus and was SPU’s second straight conference beam champion as senior teammate Kristi Hayashida shared the 2015 gold ... Falcons gymnasts have won nine all-time MPSF event championships, including four in the last five years ... Four Falcons won event titles on 11 occasions this season: Ariana Harger (7), Hayashida (2), Darian Burns (1) and Lauren Glover (1).
Last Week: Seattle Pacific shattered its season-best team score on March 11 with a mark of 194.100 that is the seventh-highest point total in school history, concluding its regularseason women’s gymnastics schedule in a dual meet at Washington. The Falcons surpassed their previous 2017 best by 1.50 points. That was a score of 192.600 registered on Feb. 24 at UC Davis. The host Huskies won the team competition, compiling 196.925 points. SPU junior Ariana Harger placed third in the all-around with a four-event total of 38.800. She tied for third on the vault with a mark of 9.800. Harger also shared third place on the floor exercise, matching freshman teammate Darian Burns’ 9.875 score.
Nationals at Brougham: SPU hosts the three-day 2017 USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships, April 7-9 at Brougham Pavilion. The Falcons won three national titles (1986, 1992, 1997), parlaying the home gym advantage into the 1997 crown. USAGym took over the national meet in 2002 after the NCAA stopped sponsoring a Division II championship. Several Division I schools, that adhere to the Division II limit of eight scholarships, compete in the USAGym Collegiate ranks, including Yale, Penn and Brown.

2017 Preview: The Falcons want to be home when they collect their fourth national championship. Seattle Pacific, winner of titles in 1986, 1992 and 1997, plays host to the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships in April. They parlayed the home gym advantage into the top spot on the victory platform in 1997. “Definitely it’s great to have the kids competing in their home gym. The home crowd and not having to travel is a good advantage for us,” said Coach Laurel Tindall, in her 42nd season at SPU. “We tend to have a good meet when we host.” The 2017 pursuit to the podium features 10 returning letterwinners, including defending floor exercise national champion, junior Ariana Harger. Also returning are balance beam silver medalist Kristi Hayashida and Lauren Glover, who earned bronze on the floor exercise. Breanne Beltran finished eighth on the uneven bars. They seek to offset the departure of Maria Hundley, who won a school-record seven national titles during the last four years. The Division II Falcons seek to improve upon the third-place national result they accomplished at the 2014, 2015 and 2016 USAGym meets. A stellar group of six newcomers will find places to make their presence felt. “We have some really great freshmen. In our sport we recruit for them to contribute right away. Both Darian (Burns) and Lena (Wirth) are strong gymnasts in several events and will contribute a lot along with Miyuki (Matsune).” SPU is in pursuit of its 35th championship meet berth in the last 36 years. Tindall and her staff of Sarah Jean Marshall and Carly Dockendorf intend to extend that streak by staying home for the championships.
2016 Recap: The Falcons forged one of the finest seasons in school history in 2016. They placed third at nationals as a team and collected 13 All-America certificates at the USAG Collegiate Championships in St. Charles, Mo. Maria Hundley won national titles in the all-around and vault, giving her a record seven career championships. Ariana Harger tied for the floor title while Kristi Hayahida brought home a silver medal on the balance beam and Lauren Glover was a floor exercise bronze medalist. In the USAG team Parking finals, the Falcons compiled a school-record total of 194.875 points to secure a thirdNearest parking lots to Brougham Pavilion are located place showing. SPU finished fourth at the MPSF (conference) Championships with a off Third Ave. West, between Dravus to the south and mark of 193.000. Ewing to the north. Parking is free and open to the Coach Tindall: Laurel Tindall (Anderson) was there the very first time a group of Seattle public after 5 p.m. weekdays and all day on weekends. Pacific gymnasts marched onto the competition floor in 1974. Now, four decades later, she still is an integral part of a program that she helped nurture and lead to a prominent spot on the national scene since taking the coaching reigns in 1976. Whether as an athlete, coach or international-level judge, Tindall has spent a lot of time at the top of the gymnastics world. As she enters her 42nd year as head coach, Tindall’s SPU teams have won three national championships (1997, 1992, 1986). Falcon athletes garnered 30 national crowns, one of which she earned on the vault in 1975. Tindall has been named the national Coach of the Year four times, most recently in 2003. And, in a tribute to all of her accomplishments in the SPU gym, Tindall was a charter member of the Falcon Legends Hall of Fame. She also operates the Falcon Gymnastics Center for local youth.
