GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM SERVICES

Referral Definition “Gifted and talented children and youth are those of high potential or ability whose learning characteristics and educational needs require qualitatively differentiated educational experiences and/or services. Possession of these talents and gifts or the potential for their development, will be evidenced through an interaction of above average intellectual ability, task commitment and/or motivation, and creative ability.”

Parents, teachers, or students may refer a student for gifted screening. The program serves students that have demonstrated high academic ability, creativity, and/or task commitment. See our website for additional information and referral forms:

Identification

NLRGT: A = E4 Achievement is Engagement, Enrichment, Enthusiasm, Enjoyment

When a student is referred for gifted screening, he or she is observed and data are collected. Gifted facilitators create an extensive case study for each referral that is a compilation of standardized test scores, a school ability index, a creative index, behavioral rating scales, interviews, and student products. All data are carefully analyzed in blind screening by a committee to determine the best options for that student.

Placement Quest students in grades K-5 participate in pull out resource classrooms with licensed gifted facilitators. These facilitators also collaborate with the classroom teachers to ensure a differentiated learning experience in the regular classroom. MIDDLE SCHOOL: In the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, gifted students may be placed in a GT seminar class with a licensed gifted facilitator. Students should also be placed in pre-AP classes. HIGH SCHOOL: In grades 9-10, gifted students should continue to participate in pre-AP classes and begin AP classes in 10th grade. At the 11-12 grades, gifted students should participate in pre-AP, Advanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate classes. The coordinator works with individual students as needed. ENRICHMENT: In addition to exceptional educational opportunities, all levels, NLRSD offers a myriad of enrichment options in the fine arts and in academic competitions. ELEMENTARY:
