Wright Group Early Reading Intervention Fact Sheet What is Wright Group Early Reading Intervention? Wright Group Early Reading Intervention is a systematic, strategic, and intensive system of support that schools and districts can provide for students who are not meeting reading expectations in their classroom.

What is the goal of the program? he goal of the Wright Group Early Reading Intervention program is to accelerate T student achievement so students in grades K through 3 are reading at grade level.

How are students selected for services and how do they exit from the program? Students who qualify for services may receive the entrance exam from the Assessment Guide. They are usually the lowest twentieth percentile of students within a grade level. A cut score is determined for placement. (Some districts may have established their own criteria for intervention.) Students who are in the program receive the exit assessment at the end of the program. If the formative assessment shows radical progress, the student may be given the exit assessment. Criteria are included in the assessment book to help determine exit from the program.

What happens during a typical reading intervention session? Once students are placed in the program, they start at lesson 1. The lessons integrate the five essential elements of reading instruction to ensure comprehensive instruction, maximize teaching time, and lead to higher levels of reading achievement. The instructional procedure is a routine that is followed daily. Since highly skilled readers spend significantly more time practicing (actually reading) than less-skilled readers (Guthrie 2004), a considerable portion of the lesson routine is on practicing reading, or increasing the volume of reading.

How often do students receive intervention instruction? Students in Wright Group Early Reading Intervention work with intervention staff accordingly: • Kindergarten—one-on-one for 20 minutes daily for 12 weeks • Grade 1—up to 3-on-one for 30 minutes daily for 28 weeks • Grades 2 and 3—up to 5-on-one for 30 minutes daily for 28 weeks

Fact Sheet How is this program beneficial, and how is it different than the competition? Only through systematic, strategic, and intensive intervention can struggling readers begin to close that gap. The Wright Group Early Reading Intervention program provides this needed intervention for students in kindergarten through grade 3. It differs from the competition because it accelerates learning and it’s cost-effective, easy-to-implement, and provides more opportunities for reading than many of the programs on the market.

How was this program developed? The Wright Group Early Reading Intervention program is research-based, built on the work of Dr. Darrell Morris. Dr. Morris is a professor of education and Director of the Reading Clinic at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. For over 30 years, Dr. Morris has worked with interventions for at-risk readers. His work began with an after-school tutoring program in Illinois called the Howard Street Tutoring Program, and has continued with school districts in North Carolina, Illinois, Montana, and other states. Districts that have implemented the program have attained impressive results. The program author, Dr. Charlene Cobb, has been instrumental in implementing successful intervention programs based on Dr. Morris’s work. She has worked in large and diverse districts and achieved impressive results.
