THE COACHES JIM WELLS – HEAD COACH Jim Wells has been the full-time head coach of the Lions men’s hockey team since 2009. Prior to joining the York coaching staff, first as an assistant before he took over the full-time job, he was the head coach of Seneca College’s men’s varsity team for four seasons and led his players to success both on and off the ice. Under his guidance, the Sting captured two Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) bronze medals. The squad also set a Seneca record for points in a season during the 2003-04 campaign and became the first Seneca team to achieve exhibition victories over NCAA Division I and II teams. Following his stint at Seneca, Wells took over the Newmarket Hurricanes, a team that competes in the Ontario Hockey Association Provincial Tier II Junior A league. Highlights from his seasons with the Hurricanes include reaching the North Conference finals in 2005 as one of only three teams that reached 30 wins and graduating nine players in two seasons to the NCAA. Wells was also an assistant with the squad from 1996 to 1999. PETER McBRIDE – ASSOCIATE COACH Peter McBride has been on the Lions coaching staff since 2006, serving first as an assistant coach before becoming the associate head coach under Jim Wells. He has also been the head scout for the program and continues to play a major role in recruiting. His previous coaching experience includes three years as an associate coach with the Newmarket Hurricanes of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League (OPJHL) and three seasons as an associate coach at Seneca College. He is also a course conductor for the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA). PHIL BARSKI – ASSISTANT COACH Phil Barski joined the Lions coaching staff in 2013, returning to the CIS after previously being in the league as a player. He began his collegiate playing career in the NCAA at Bowling Green State University in 2000, where he played two seasons before heading to the CIS for two seasons with the University of Calgary from 2002-04. He played 38 games for the Dinos, scoring 27 points and earning academic all-Canadian accolades. Prior to going to Bowling Green he also spent one season playing under Wells with the Newmarket Hurricanes of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League (OPJHL). Behind the bench, Barski currently coaches the Pickering Panthers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). He also has experience coaching with the Vaughan Rangers, Toronto Marlboros and the Don Mills Flyers. He also runs a skills and development academy for North Toronto Hockey. WAYNE PARRO – ASSISTANT COACH Wayne Parro joined the Lions coaching staff in 2012. He is the executive director of Coaches of Canada and is a graduate of the National Coaching Institute (NCI). He has High Performance 1 certification in hockey and has many years of coaching and administration experience in AAA hockey in Ontario. He is also a coach educator with the Ontario Minor Hockey Association, a master learning facilitator with Baseball Canada and a learning facilitator in NCCP multisport coach education. Parro has international coaching experience and is a former coach with the women’s national team program for Baseball Canada. Marietta Wong - Student Therapist Khanh Vy - Student Therapist

COACH’S SEASON OUTLOOK The stage is set for the York Lions men’s hockey team to make a deep run in the OUA playoffs this season. Head coach Jim Wells has spent the last several years assembling the pieces necessary to form a contending team, and this year’s line-up features a mix of talented veterans and rookies that can compete with the teams at the top of the conference. That work, and the progress the squad has shown in training camp following last year’s earlier-than-desired exit from the playoffs – the Lions finished seventh in the OUA West standings with a 14-14-0 record and were eliminated in the first round by the Windsor Lancers for the second straight year – has the Lions dreaming big about what is possible for them this season. “We are looking forward to a good season this year,” said Wells. “We had a solid recruiting year and already have a great veteran core that will lead this team. We feel we should be in the top four in our division and then aim for a long playoff run.” The strength of the squad this year is its depth and balance at all positions on the ice. The team lost just one of its top 15 scorers from last year and only three players overall who appeared in more than 15 games, and that experience should serve the Lions well in the tight OUA West. The nucleus of the team is made up of a trio of veteran players in their final year with the squad in forward Jesse Messier, defenceman John de Gray and goaltender Andrew Perugini. The three of them give Wells a leader at each position to rely on, and he will take full advantage of their skills both on and off the ice. Messier, the team captain, has been a consistent offensive force for the Lions since he first donned the red and white. The right winger has appeared in at least 26 games in each of his four years with the program and has hit the 30-point plateau for the past two seasons, including a career high of 34 in 2011-12 when he also earned OUA West second-team all-star honours. With more than 100 points he is already among York’s career leaders in scoring, and he can climb into the top 10 with another 30-point season this year. de Gray and Perugini, both of whom have previously played in the AHL and ECHL, make up a formidable duo in the back that will be called upon to protect the Lions’ zone. de Gray, a former third-round NHL draft pick, debuted for the Lions last year and made an immediate impact, earning OUA West secondteam all-star honours on defence, while Perugini has spent the last two seasons carrying the bulk of the workload between the pipes and in his first year finished among the OUA’s top five in goals against average and save percentage. “Perugini wants to be the best goaltender in the division this year and his background proves that he is capable of that. de Gray was every-
thing we thought he’d be when he first came here and his presence on the blue line is invaluable to our team success. Messier has been the leader of this program for many years now and we once against expect him to be there again.” After Messier, wingers Michael Santini, Evan Gravenor and Jordan Forfar, as well as top centres Troy Barss and Tyler McGee, will be counted on to provide the bulk of the scoring for the squad. Santini was the Lions’ top rookie last year, finishing second in team scoring and among the top 15 first-year players in the OUA with 20 points, while the other four are all going into their third years with the program and have all shown their offensive prowess, posting at least 16 points in one of their first two seasons. They are joined up front by rookies Gregg Sutch and Jordan Merante, proven offensive weapons who bring depth to the team and will help the Lions roll four lines with consistency. Sutch, a big winger with offensive flair, is a former fifth-round NHL draft pick who appeared in nearly 300 games over a five-year OHL career, and Merante, a play-making centre, is coming off a point-per-game season with St. Michael’s in the OJHL. In addition to de Gray, the defence will get a boost from the return of Jordan Davies, a sturdy offensive defenceman who has appeared in all 56 games over his first two seasons and been among the league leaders in scoring by blueliners each year, and Tyler Mort, who played in 17 games last season before returning to the OHL for his final junior year. The defensive corps will also benefit from the addition of rookie Shayne Rover, who spent his entire junior career with Niagara in the OHL, playing in 298 regular-season and playoff games over five years and wrapping up his time there as an assistant captain. No player on last year’s roster played more regularly than Perugini, who started 26 of the 28 regular-season games in net. Some of that load will be balanced this year with a new back-up goaltender in his younger brother Chris. The younger Perugini spent four full seasons in the OHL with Ottawa and Sault Ste. Marie, appearing in more than 40 games in each of the last three years, and is coming off an initial season in the CIS with Saint Mary’s. Wells expects the team to play a fast-paced, aggressive style and for the players to use their strong skating abilities and physical size to their advantage. On paper, the Lions are stacked at every position and if they can translate that into success on the ice, they will once again move into the upper echelon of the OUA.
