The Coaches

Corey Thomaston is in his seventh at LeTourneau University and has a 42-115 record with the YellowJackets. Thomaston was honored by his peers following the 201112 season by being named ASC East Division Coach of the Year. That reason was evident as he took his YellowJackets and guided them to a 13-12 record, their first winning season since 2001-02, and guided to a tie for fourth place in the ASC East, also their highest finish in well over a decade. During his tenure at LeTourneau, Thomaston has placed five members on the All-ASC East Division squads, as well as four members on the All-ASC East team. He also coached the 2011-12 Newcomer of the Year in Sharday Cotton. Previously, he served as an assistant coach for the NCAA Division I Radford University women’s basketball program from 2002-07.

Kevin Baker is in his second season as the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Texas at Tyler. He posted an 18-9 overall mark in his first year en route to ASC East Division Coach of the Year honors.

The 2014 season marks the 18th year of play in the American Southwest Conference in league history and the first to begin play without an East and West Division. Regular season play begins Nov. 15. The three-day, eight-team, single-elimination conference tournament is slated for February 28-March 2 at the site of the No. 1 seed and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship will be on the line. Double Double Part I

Senior Alexis Wighaman registered her second double double of the season with a 15 point, 12 rebound effort against Louisiana College (Dec. 7, 2013). Earlier this year, she had 14 points and 13 rebounds in the win over East Texas Baptist. Teammates Julencia Curtis (18 pts., 13 reb. vs. East Texas Baptist) and Ashley Stephens (13 pts., 12 reb. at University of Dallas) recorded double double performances earlier in the season. Double Double Part II

With the double double performances vs. East Texas Baptist (Nov. 26, 2013), by Julencia Curtis (18 pts., 13 reb.) and Alexis Wighaman (14 pts., 13 reb.), the last time that LeTourneau had two players with double doubles was when Denee McKay (24 pts., 10 reb.) and Katrina Visina (19 pts., 10 reb.) achieved the same feat on January 26, 2006.

Best Start Since 1996-1997

LeTourneau started the season with a 4-1 mark for its best start since the 1996-97 season when the YellowJackets’ under the direction of Hall of Fame head coach Mary Ann Otwell posted a 30-4 overall mark. Clamping Down on Defense

The YellowJackets held the Lady Choctaws of Mississippi College to 27.3% shooting to match its lowest shooting effort from the field since a Feb. 27, 2004 tilt against Howard Payne. Furthermore, MC was held to 10.5% (2-for-19) shooting from the 3-point line, its lowest output since they were held without a 3 pointer against Louisiana College on Jan. 8, 2013. Second Half Sparks

LeTourneau scored a season-high 46 points in the second half against Louisiana College. It is the most points in a half since they put up 48 in the second half of a 97-46 win over Sul Ross State on December 6, 2012. At the Free-Throw Line

LeTourneau and Louisiana College combined for 75 free throws and make 53 - the most in a LeTourneau women’s basketball game since they combined to make 53 against Concordia, last year on Nov. 17. The 75 free throws by the YellowJackets and an opponents were the most since an 80 free throw game with East Texas Baptist on Feb. 11, 2012.

Block Party

The YellowJackets were strong on the inside, blocking seven Lady Choctaw shots on Thursday - its second highest total of the season. To start the season, LETU blocked 10 University of Dallas shots. Through the first five games, the YellowJackets have 28 rejections (5.6 per game) which leads the ASC. The four blocked shots each by Julencia Curtis and Ashley Stephens against the Unviersity of Dallas were the most by a LeTourneau player since DeShante Thomas blocked five against Texas-Dallas on Feb. 18, 2012. The YellowJackets recorded 10 blocked shots against the Crusaders which were the most since a 10-block effort at Texas-Tyler on December 16, 2011. Dialing Long Distance

Senior Ashley Fajardo hit a career-best 5 three pointers in the win over ETBU. The last time that a LeTourneau hit five 3 pointers was on December 3, 2009 when Alexis Poplear did so against Mary Hardin-Baylor in a 65-64 win. In all five games in 2013-14, Fajardo has hit multiple 3 pointers. An Experienced Senior Class

The YellowJackets will be led by its three seniors Julencia Curtis, Jessica Manas and Alexis Wighaman. The three have combined to play in 229 games (avg. 74) and made 115 starts (avg. 37) in three-plus years at LeTourneau. Manas leads the trio with 81 games played and 52 starts. Going the Extra Mile

Senior Jessica Manas and junior Rebecca Stewart took off-season conditioning to the extra mile. Both were members of the LeTourneau University women’s cross country team that finished a program-best fourth at the ASC Championships. Manas clocked a season-best 5k time of 25:03.4 at the Demon Invitational (Oct. 12) and a season-best 6k time of 30:40.88 at the ASC Championships (Nov. 2) as she ran in all six meets for the YellowJackets. Stewart participated in five meets. She recorded a season-best 5k time of 21:53 at the Demon Invitational (Oct. 12) and a 6k time of 27:21.91 at the ASC Championships (Nov. 2). She finished as the YellowJackets second runner in all five meets; plus she posted a pair of top-20 finishes including a season-best 13th place finish at the Demon Invitational.
