2017 KCAI/Zahner Proposal!

Lila Ferber

Statement of Intent ! My art developed from a hands-on way of learning that involves play and interaction, often including balancing and kinetic pieces. Your fabrication is an opportunity to translate my hand-made pieces into a large public sculpture. The form I’m proposing is approximate, the details will be determined during the project development process. This model and the reference images I’ve included illustrate my intent. !

! In my idea, there are ribbon-like structures made of curved stainless steel. There’s a tall curve that’s connected to the ground in two places, and a small curve that helps hold it up. There are two mobiles that will move in the wind, one at a 13’ high level for viewing and one at a 5’ lower level that invites interaction. The shapes are made of sheet metal. They’re organic forms with louvered shapes punched out in the middle. The shapes will cast dancing shadows on the pool, and the hole punches will let sunlight through. The shapes are slightly curved to catch the wind. ! There are also three 3D shapes interspersed with the flatter shapes. I’d like them to be made of foam and painted fiberglass. The mobiles are made with steel round stock. They’re built by starting with the bottom piece and building up, with loops to connect the levels. The top loop will be connected to the main structure with a swivel joint, so it can spin all the way around. It will stand through storms because the connection points on the main structure and the loops will be secure.
