27 April 2015 DRUG REPORTS SPIKE IN SHEPPARTON AND WODONGA FROM DOB IN A DEALER CAMPAIGN The Victorian community is taking a clear stand against drugs, with Crime Stoppers Victoria receiving a significant response to the Dob in a Dealer program run in Shepparton and Wodonga last month. The Dob in a Dealer program was launched in Shepparton on 12 March and Wodonga on 13 March to gather confidential information from the community about the manufacture and distribution of crystal methylamphetamine (‘ice’) and other illicit drugs. In the fortnight following the launch of the program, Crime Stoppers recorded a 400 per cent spike in community information reports about possible drug activity from the Shepparton region, and a 133 per cent spike from the Wodonga region. The campaign also saw a rise in reports across the state, with reporting on overall drug related information across Victoria increasing by 17 per cent when compared with recent weeks. The successful result in Shepparton builds on the information already gathered in the Victorian towns of Bendigo, Wodonga, Moe and Warrnambool. Crime Stoppers Victoria Community Manager Peter Brown thanked Shepparton and Wodonga residents for their assistance and heralded the results as a significant step toward disrupting the supply of drugs into regional Victoria. “Drugs like crystal methylamphetamine have devastating consequences for regional Victorian towns, placing pressure on police, emergency service workers, drug counsellors and public health specialists,” Mr Brown said. “The response to the Dob in a Dealer program from local residents has been significant, and the increase in phone and online reports shows how concerned the Shepparton and Wodonga communities are about drug activity in their regions. “Information from the community leads to real results when it comes to breaking the cycle of crime, and the information gathered over the two weeks of the campaign has been passed on to the police for enquiry.
