DRUG REPORTS TO CRIME STOPPERS CONTINUE TO SPIKE DURING THE CHARITY’S 2016 DOB IN A DEALER CAMPAIGN ROLL OUT There has been a spike in drug-related Information Reports to Crime Stoppers Victoria since the charity launched its first Dob in a Dealer campaign in April. Dob in a Dealer calls on the community to confidentially report any information about trafficking or manufacturing of methamphetamines and other illicit drugs. Since Crime Stoppers Victoria launched its first Dob in a Dealer campaign in Wangaratta on April 11, there has been an average 105 per cent increase in drug-related Information Reports to Crime Stoppers Victoria in areas where campaigns have been held. Crime Stoppers Victoria CEO Sam Hunter thanked the public for its continued support and said information from the community leads to real results when it comes to breaking the cycle of crime. “Firstly we’d like to thank our communities for continuing to support us in our quest to stamp out ice and other illicit drugs in the region,” she said. “Drugs like crystal methylamphetamine have devastating consequences for all Victorians, placing pressure on police, health services, as well emergency service staff and volunteers. “Tackling the flow of illicit drugs into our neighbourhoods requires a whole-of-community response and the Dob in a Dealer campaign is about empowering every member of the community to play their part in reducing the manufacture and supply. “All the information received to Crime Stoppers is handled in utmost confidence. The information received is then passed to police for investigation where it remains confidential. “We continue to urge all Victorians to pick up the phone and call Crime Stoppers confidentially on 1800 333 000 or report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au anything you know about the manufacture, supply and dealing of illicit drugs in your neighbourhood.” Crime Stoppers’ Dob in a Dealer campaign has so far been delivered in seven regional Victorian locations in 2016, as well as one campaign in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

The Victorian program forms part of an Australia-wide roll-out of the campaign which aims to aid in the detection and disruption of drugs being supplied across the nation. The national project is funded by a $1 million grant from the Australian Government and run in collaboration with Victoria Police. 17 Dob in Dealer campaigns will be delivered across Victoria in 2016. More than 75 campaigns will be rolled out nation-wide. The campaign was run in 15 towns in regional Victoria last year, contributing to a 168% increase in drugrelated Information Reports to Crime Stoppers Victoria. Methylamphetamine is a complex issue involving not only law enforcement, but is increasingly identified as a health issue. The campaign is aimed at identifying the manufacturers and distributors of methylamphetamine and other illicit drugs, rather than the end user. Crime Stoppers is aware that some people reporting may have an existing addiction to drugs or may be family members of someone suffering an addiction. Crime Stoppers will refer those who require assistance to local health care agencies where they can discuss treatment options. If you or someone you know is affected by drug use or addiction, please contact support services such as Family Drug Help on 1300 660 068 or Youth Support and Advocacy Service on 1800 014 446.
