Toastmaster’s Event

Past Events This semester has produced some great professional and community service events. It’s been a semester full of events such as baking cookies at the Ronald McDonald House hosted by Alejandra Jimenez (VP of Community Service). It was a great opportunity for brothers to give back and help out the community.

One of the other events was a professional one where brothers went to Ernst and Young for an office tour and for internship opportunities with Alpha Kappa Psi. This event was put together by Lily Gaydasch (VP of Professional Events). This event gave the brothers an opportunity to network with one of the “Big Four” accounting firms in the world. We also collaborated with another professional fraternity on campus (Alpha Kappa Psi) for this event.

Future Events There are many great events our officers have planned for us in the future. With recruiting in the rear view mirror, we look forward to events that will be planned by the pledge’s. There is also a social gathering happening for Halloween which is put together by Becca Burczak (Brotherhood Chair). Community Service officer Alejandra Jimenez has put together many events that included volunteering for the annual Hot Chocolate 15K/5K run! Professional Event has some exciting stuff planned as well. A tour of the Federal Reserve Bank is in the works and multiple workshops pertaining to resume, professional emails, and dressing up for success. Everything is being put together by Lily Gaydasch. Fundraising events are also planned and has been put together with strategic thinking by Erin Vandeburg. It includes places such as Felice’s Pizza and Blaze Pizza. She also helped get us our very own Lyft promo code worth $50! Just use the code “DSPGammaPi” for $5 off your next 10 rides.

The event was put together by Lily Gaydasch, with help from Ali Alhabboubi who is a part of Michigan Ave’s Toastmasters himself. Toastmasters is a club focused on improving public speaking skills and is the world leader in developing leadership and communication skills. The event took place in Beane Hall at Lewis Towers. We look forward to partnering up with Toastmaster again!

College to Career Panel Spring 2017 Gamma Pi is hosting an alumni panel for the Quinlan School of Business. If you are interested in participating and speaking about how your experiences at Loyola have shaped your career, then please contact me by December 4th!

Alumni Spotlight Gamma Pi would like to recognize Brother Felicia Rosado who was initiated in 2010 and graduated in 2013 with a Finance, Management, and Information Systems degree. She now works at Google in New York, great job

Felicia keep up the great work. We asked Felicia what her favorite thing about DSP was? She responded: “There are so many things but I'd have to say the brotherhood, as cliché as that sounds. I've made lifelong friends from DSP that have visited me in NYC over the last few years and we get together every time I'm back in Chicago. Just like any organization, you get out what you put in. DSP taught me a lot and helped me grow both professionally and personally”.

Felicia Rosado

Initiation Gamma Pi would like to formally invite our alumni to Fall 2016’s Pledge Class initiation on November 19th at Loyola University Chicago in Crown Center Auditorium. The ceremony will start at 7pm sharp.

Alumni Big Starting next semester, we would like to introduce the idea of having an Alumni Big to pledges! This will be very minimal, but will give the pledge a contact to reach out to about the workforce field.

If you are interested, please let me know by December 4th. It is a great way to give back to our chapter!

“A Toastmaster Experience” By: Bradford Horton Toastmasters is a program designed to help people become skilled at professional speaking and speech writing, and being asked to participate in a Toastmasters event gave me a great amount of apprehension of my past failures in public speaking. The last time I had given a speech was all the way back in high school, and the only thing I remembered was nearly passing out from fear. I walked in with the same fear, but immediately my fear was alleviated when I met the president; she was smiling, friendly, and professional. I was starting to feel better, but of course my nerves were still high. The event started off with an introduction of all attendants, not just members. I thought it was a fantastic way to start; not only would I get to know the members; I would also get to know all attendants. Then we started with short impromptu speeches. A Toastmasters member was elected to pick the topic and the volunteer simply went from there in any direction. It was great to see my fellow brothers up there telling creative

stories from unique perspectives. Then we took a break, and my moment of testing had arrived. I went up to the stage excited, but nervous, still very nervous. I began my speech about my lack of success in sports, and the crowd seemed to be receiving it well. Suddenly I had reached a level confidence in public speaking; the words came naturally and the story was raised to life. I finished satisfied even with my flaws of going over time and using filler words. After my speech, we all watched the Toastmasters members given their speeches with truly inspiring levels of confidence, creativity and relatability. At the end, I received feedback from a few members about my speech. It was the perfect blend of compliments and constructive criticism. The event’s closure was met with a certain sadness for me, as my moment in the sun had ended, but I was truly inspired to develop my new talent and reach new heights of speaking and speech making.

Thank You!
