Night Games This Year At Cragan Field Town Council agrees to amend lease with East Greenwich Cemetery Association so that lights can be constructed at little league field. By Robert Plain | January 25, 2011
There will be night baseball and softball games starting this summer at Cragan Field as the Town Council on Monday gave permission to East Greenwich Little League to build lights at the field. "As everyone knows we've had some issues with fields over last few years," Bill Anderson told the Town Council on Monday night. "Field availability has become a big issue. We would like to add lights to cragan to help alleviate that." Anderson said having lights at Cragan Field would allow EGLL to use that field more intensively. The league is limited in how often it can use other fields in town because they are often being used by other youth or interscholastic sports teams. He said the main reason for the lights is that Cragan Field is the only baseball diamond available for fall ball. With shorter days in the autumn baseball and softball season, teams are often forced to only play three-inning games. The lights will also be used during the summer when they will be required to be turned off by 10 p.m. The night games will be played primarily by teams in the "majors," the little league division for boys and girls primarily ages 10 through 12, but league officials said they may also schedule Friday or Saturday night games for the younger division. Little League officials told the Council that the nearby neighbors are supportive of the idea. Some neighbors told them, they told the Council, that the lights would help cut down on teenage drinking at Cragan Field. The four new light poles, behind each dugout and foul pole, will be 60-feet tall. The height, Anderson said, is to reduce glare on the neighboring homes. The Council voted unanimously to amend its lease with the East Greenwich Cemetery Association, the owners of the field, so that the lights can be built there. Chris Plympton, a little league official, said league officials believe they can have the lights installed in time for opening day in May.
