Fabric Requirements and Cutting Instructions These requirements are for a finished size of 51’’ x 15 ½’’. The table runner was designed using Jelly Roll strips left over from a previous project. These are precut strips measuring 2.5’’ x Width of Fabric (WOF). If you would like to do the same, ignore the Yardage column below and use the Cutting Instructions for your fabric requirements. These requirements are based on a 42’’ width of fabric (WOF).

Piecing Instructions A photo tutorial for this table runner will be available at http://sewtodaycleantomorrow.blogspot.com.au from November 7, 2014. Use a ¼'' seam allowance unless otherwise stated. With right sides together, sew the strips along the long edge, in the following order. White > Red > White > Red > Green > White > White > Green > White

Press the seams in the same direction.

Cut the sewn piece into 2 ½’’ strips. You will need 16 strips in total.

Line your seams up with the markings on your ruler to ensure they’re straight.

(Make 16) Create the End Units

The following steps are for creating one end unit. You will need to repeat them and create a total of two units. Take one strip. Unpick and discard the last four squares (White > White > Green > White).

Keep this unit.

Discard this unit.

Take a second strip. Unpick and discard the first three squares (White > Red > White).

Discard this unit.

Keep this unit.

Sew these two units together as per the following diagram. The first strip is rotated so that it now starts with the green square. Be sure to match your seams between each square. Press the seam to the left.

Note that the first squares are aligned at the top, but the last ones are staggered. Take a third strip. Unpick and discard the last two squares (Green > White).

Keep this unit.

Discard this unit.

Sew the strip to the previous two. This strip is rotated so that it now starts with the two white squares. Press the seam to the left.

Take a fourth strip. Unpick and discard the first square (White). Discard this unit.

Keep this unit.

Sew this strip to the previous three. Press the seam to the left.

This creates one end unit. Repeat these steps to create a second end unit.

Create the body of the table runner Using the remaining eight strips, continue adding to one of the end units as per the following diagram. Press the seams to the left.

Rotate every odd strip to start with the White > Green squares. Note that the first strip is aligned with the top of the end unit. Each strip after that is staggered one block down from the previous.

The table runner will now look like this. You will have one end unit remaining to be sewn.

Attach the right end unit Sew the remaining end unit as per the following diagram. Press the seam to the left.

Note that the right end unit is rotated and aligned with the bottom edge of the table runner.

Borders Carefully trim the table runner to remove the white points along the top and bottom edges. The cut should be made ¼’’ above the coloured diamonds so as not to lose their points when sewing the border strips.

Sew a border strip to the top of the table runner. Any excess will be trimmed off after sewing. Press the seam towards the border.

Trim the borders on an angle, in line with the end points. Discard the excess, shown by the shaded area in the diagram below.

Repeat for the bottom edge.

Sew a border strip to one of the pointed edges. Press the seam towards the border.

Trim the border strip in line with the edges of the table runner. The excess, shown as the shaded area in the diagram below, can be used for the remaining edges of the points.

Repeat the last steps for the remaining three edges of the end points.

Quilting and Binding Quilt and bind the table runner as desired. The example on the front cover uses a very simple ‘stitch in the ditch’ quilting pattern following the diagonal lines of the table runner.

The table runner was bound using a double fold, continuous binding, with mitred corners.
