18 August, Hackney, London, UK: Residents of the London borough of Hackney will be able to travel their neighbourhood in style thanks to a new charitable initiative launched today by easyCar Club. The borough has been named the UK’s car-sharing capital, and to reward drivers in the area, easyCar Club has given residents their very own Hackney Carriage. To celebrate the area’s heritage, the cab has been decorated in the style of the East End’s famous Pearly Kings and Queens, and will be available for Hackney residents to rent for just £10 per day. All proceeds raised will be passed to the London Pearly Kings & Queens Society, which is raising money for the St Joseph’s Hospice on Hackney’s Mare Street. The taxi, which was unveiled today outside St Joseph’s by easyCar CEO Richard Laughton and Pearly King and Queen, Bob Paice and Doreen Golding, will be available to rent from Geffrye Street, London, E2 (close to Hoxton Station). To hire the car, potential drivers will simply need to sign up for free to easyCar Club, book the cab online and collect the keys from a secure Key Safe located near to the taxi. The taxi is an iconic TX1 produced by London Taxis International, and instantly recognisable as a classic “Black cab”.
easyCar Club is running the scheme to thank Hackney residents for being the most enthusiastic early adopters of its peer-to-peer car hire service since it launched in London in 2013. The borough of Hackney and its surrounds is currently home to more than 20 cars which can be rented through the Club, and a total of more than 2,000 fully vetted members. easyCar Club is a service which allows its members to make money by renting out their cars to other drivers when they are not using them. Drivers save money through low cost, more convenient local car hire. Peer-to-peer car rental is an integral part of the ‘sharing economy’ which has seen particularly strong growth in East London in recent years. Richard Laughton, easyCar CEO, comments: “Hackney has been a big supporter of peer-to-peer services like ours, so we thought it was time to give something back. This scheme gives Hackney’s drivers the chance to travel around this vibrant borough in style. If you were riding in a cab you could easily run up a £10 bill in a matter of minutes, but here that gets you the whole cab for the day – and all money raised will go back into worthy causes thanks to our work with the London Pearly Kings and Queens Society.”
Hackney residents who want to book the car for a day can do so by visiting easycarclub.com and signing up for free to the service.
