“Show Us Your Tray” Contest Winner: Chartwells-Thompson and DCPS Food Services are proud to be a winner of the USDA Foods “Show Us Your Tray” photo contest! Our tray consisted of: our Mandarin Chicken Salad (featuring USDA diced chicken and whole wheat tortilla chips), a homemade cornbread muffin (using USDA flour and eggs),

a delicious berry crisp (made with USDA blueberries and strawberries), and a fresh side of strawberries. This power-packed DCPS meal showcases a delicious, fresh, and colorful tray that demonstrates how you can creatively use USDA Foods products in a variety of ways in school meals.

Cornbread and the Healthy Food Challenge: On February 27th, local author and teacher Vincent Taylor released his newest book in his muchbeloved Cornbread Book Series – Cornbread and the Healthy Food Challenge. practice their reading skills and vocabulary. This newest entry into the series was especially significant to our team, as it focuses on the importance of a healthy diet and proper exercise. Our dieticians Kate Dienst and Brynn Sofianek were

even consulted by the author for their expertise, to make sure that factual and relevant nutrition education information was incorporated into the book. ChartwellsK12 was proud to once again be a sponsor of this great educational tool!

Jefferson Davis Middle School Remodel:

Duval County Public Schools and ChartwellsK12 partnered together to completely remodel the kitchen and service areas for Jefferson Davis Middle School. The remodeled facilities were opened on February 17th, and feature four new serving lines, all new smallwares, new uniforms for the kitchen team, new paint and flooring, and new seating for the students. The students and faculty are loving their new café experience!

5-2-1-0 Jacksonville: San Pablo 5k for Play: As part of our Eat.Learn.Live. ideals, it is important to ChartwellsK12 to support healthy initiatives in our local communities. On February 6th, ChartwellsK12 once again helped sponsor the annual San Pablo Elementary 5k for Play. The race not only encourages the students and families of the school to exercise as a group, but also raises money for their PTA to use to coordinate other nutrition and physical activity–based programs at the school.

Crystal Springs Health Fair:

On March 3rd, ChartwellsK12 will be attending the parent health fair at Crystal Springs Elementary Schools. Dietician Brynn Sofianek will be there to share with parents and students some healthy tips, and to share information on our interactive new menu system – Nutrislice. Chef Nicole Whitten will be serving up some healthy and delicious samples of Broccoli and Chicken Stir-Fry. Just another way to get our parents and students excited about making healthy choices!

ChartwellsK12 and DCPS Food Services are proud to be a partner of the all-new 5210 Jacksonville initiative. The movement encourages families in Duval County to make healthier choices by following the simple suggestions of: 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, 2 hours or less of recreational screen time, at least 1 hour of exercise per day, and drinking 0 sugary beverages. Be on the lookout for some great educational opportunities, like our Chefs 2 Schools events, which will showcase information on the program for our students!

Grocery Store Educational Tour:

March Food Focus:

ChartwellsK12 and DCPS are committed to food and nutrition education in and outside of the school café. As a part of that commitment, our annual Dietetic Internship programs consistently host grocery store tours for families to learn some of the following important lessons: healthful shopping on a budget, tips on how to read a nutrition label, and the best ways to walk through the aisles in a way that promotes health. Current intern Amanda Smith will be holding her free educational grocery tour on March 2nd at the Publix on San Jose Boulevard.
