CHAPTER 1

Ellie-Mae and her parents went on a vacation to the beautiful Caribbean island of Tobago. As she walked through the airport, she saw strange sights and heard sounds that amazed her. Everything was so different. After Ellie-Mae and her Parents arrived at their hotel and got settled, she asked them if they could go exploring.

She first explored the garden park of the hotel and was fascinated with everything. Ellie-Mae was in love with what she saw and heard. She was taking in the sights the island had to offer when she noticed two small beautiful birds. Their wings moved as swiftly as a helicopter’s propellers, faster than her eyes could see. Ellie-Mae thought that it was awesome, she was so curious by it that she went to introduce herself. She had never seen such a sight before. “Hello. My name is Ellie-Mae Elephant. What’s yours?” she asked looking from one to the other. The birds turned around at the same time and looked at her. Their eyes opened wide with shock at her size.

“Wow! You are very tall. I am Pete Hummingbird”, said the bird, speaking very fast. “And this is Peter, my twin brother.” “Wah mek yuh look suh?” Pete asked, in his local dialect. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you are saying. What language are you speaking? ” Ellie-Mae asked. Pete laughed and said “We speak English, just like you, my brother was just speaking our creole language. He was asking why you looked so different.” “Wow! It sounded fascinating. Can you teach me?”

“ Sure, we will teach you to speak our dialect. When we want to ask (Where are you going?), we say, (Weh yur goh?) . He said it slowly so she could understand the pronunciation. Elle-Mae was anxious and excited to learn her first local words. She listened carefully and tried very hard to say it like Peter but soon became frustrated because she just could not get it. Pete and Peter looked at each other with a mischievous look in their eyes and burst out laughing. They were not disappointed by her frustration. They always get a kick out of listening to visitors trying to speak their dialect. “How long are you here for?” Peter asked as he flew through the park. “Three months”, she said looking at them questioningly.

“Ok, we will teach you, if you could meet us under that big tree after lunch every day,” While they were chatting, a small dog came crashing through the shrub fence on their right. He was looking scared and lost. They stopped talking and looked at him in surprise because he was whimpering and tears were running down his face. The dog was thinking to himself, "What am I to do ? I want my mother." He then saw the group and ran towards them crying, “Please, can yuh tek meh to meh mother please? Ah doh know weh she deh.” “Why don’t you slow down and tell us what happened.” Ellie-Mae said kindly while looking down at the dog for he was very small compared to her.

He began crying even more as he was afraid he would never see his mother again.
