CHAPTER 1
Ellie-Mae and her parents went on a vacation to the beautiful Caribbean island of Tobago. As she walked through the airport, there were strange sights and sounds that amazed her. Everything was different, the trees, the birds, and even the food. After Ellie-Mae and her parents
arrived at their hotel, they got settled and went exploring. She first explored the garden park of the hotel and became fascinated by everything she saw and heard. While taking in the sights the island had to offer, her eyes glanced at two small beautiful birds. Their wings moved as fast as a helicopter’s propellers, faster than her eyes could see. They looked so magnificent with their long beaks and tiny feet that she went across to introduce herself. She had never seen such beautiful birds before. “Hello, my name is Ellie-Mae Elephant. What’s yours?” she asked, looking from one to the other. The birds turned around at the same time and looked at her. Their eyes opened wide with shock at her size. “Wow! You are really tall, I am Pete Hummingbird," said the bird, speaking 5|Page
very fast. “And this is Peter, my twin brother." “Wah mek yuh look suh?” Peter asked, in his local dialect. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you are saying. What language are you speaking?” Pete laughed and said “We speak English, just like you Ellie-Mae, my brother just spoke in our local dialect. He asked why you looked so different.”
“Wow! It sounded fascinating. Can you teach me?”
“Sure, we can teach you how to speak our dialect. When we want to ask (Where are you going?), we say, (Weh yur goh?)." Pete said it slowly so she could understand the pronunciation. *******************************************
