Teacher Appreciation Week May 4th Beginning at 6:00 pm Glee Club Concert Talent Show
Emerson is excited for the addition of archery for the 2017-2018 school year. Archery will be offered to students in the 4th-12th grades. Students will begin practicing in the fall and have the opportunity to participate in multiple tournaments in February and March. Those tournaments include an invitational tournament in Bradley, regional tournament, and state tournament in Hot Springs. Students are not required to buy any supplies to participate; no prior knowledge or experience is needed. Fourth and fifth grade students will have practice during the school day, while sixth through twelfth grades will practice outside of the school day. Practicing is crucial for success. Volunteers are welcomed to help coach and instruct if interested. Anyone who would like to volunteer to coach must attend a Basic Archery Instructor training during the summer. An archery meeting will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria. Anyone interested in participating, helping to coach, or volunteering in any form may attend.

While students, teachers, and faculty members are eagerly awaiting summer vacation, there are many important things to remember during this time. There is a phrase used in education called the “summer slide.” Often times students do no academic work during the summer vacation; then, when school begins they have “slid” backwards academically. His or her reading level may have dropped a few levels or math facts are not as automatic as they were at the end of May. Those are just a couple of examples of regression that may occur. There are ways to help the “summer slide” decrease. There are various programs offered in Columbia County to help students throughout the summer to retain educational skills, such as: the weekly children’s program at the public library, SAU’s Mulerider Kids College, and programs at Magnolia Arts. Each institution has a Facebook page which will list a schedule of events. There are other ways to help students to level academically throughout the summer. Read, read, and read, it can’t be stressed enough. Reading is extremely important. Spend 15-20 minutes each day reading with your child or having him or her read independently. Be sure and talk about the information he/she read. Conversation about the reading material can help your child retain and build comprehension skills. Various objects found in a household can be used for students to create mathematic equations to solve. Manipulatives, like: Skittles, M & M’s, dried beans, playing cards, dominos, or even toys, can be used to build a number sentence for kids to solve. Applying those skills to the real world is even more beneficial. Have your child cook with you; anytime a child can do the measuring for a recipe is a valuable experience. Students could also use a ruler to measure items or even to build an object. Most everyone in this day and time has a smart phone or tablet. There are numerous educational apps for children to use. Math app games are fantastic for students to play in order to remember and/or build math facts. Students need to venture out into problem solving as well. There are so many ways to help students stay academically savvy. Please take the time to incorporate an activity daily or weekly.
