Computer Exploration 7th Grade Course Purpose Computer Exploration 7th Grade (Semester Class) This class is designed to help 7th grade students master the standard keyboard by touch and learn features in MS Word and PowerPoint. Students will learn (1) the keyboard by touch; (2) the correct fingering technique; (3) correct spacing after punctuation marks, (4) basic word processing skills in Microsoft Word and features like clipart, word art, number/bullet lists, textboxes, (5) basic features of PowerPoint, (6) Internet safety and internet research skills, (7) basic features of Excel, and (8) Publisher: brochures and business cards It is important for students to have some keyboarding skills and to have basic computer knowledge. Having keyboarding skills and computer knowledge allows students to use the computer more efficiently when they complete assignments/projects. Also, having this skill and knowledge will also allow students to be more successful on the computerized state tests.

State Standards for Technology Enid Schools uses the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Standards for Computer/Technology Classes. ISTE Standards for Students: 1. Creativity and innovation; 2. Communication and collaboration; 3. Research and information fluency; 4. Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making; 5. Digital citizenship; 6. Technology operations and concepts

Format of Class Class activity will consist of daily keyboard practice for 9 weeks. Practice begins with the home row keys and students will progress little by little until all keys are learned. During this process basic MS Word features will be introduced along with learning the keyboard. This process takes approximately eight to nine weeks. PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher programs will be introduced during the second half of the semester.

In this class, 20% of a class will be to activate students’ prior knowledge. This will come from keyboard practice on previous keys learned. Practice will give students the opportunity to reinforce their memory and give each student a chance to get warmed up. Another 20% of the lesson will come from teacher input. Teacher input will come in the form of giving demonstrations of using correct fingers and correct reaching techniques for each key as well as individual reaching techniques. Once students are warmed up and understand correct fingering techniques, 45% of student’s time will be directly devoted to practicing new keys and building up memory of keys. The final 15% of the class will be used to identify student success. This will involve teacher observation of students practicing while using the correct fingering techniques while building up memory of keyboard without looking at keys. Also, short typing assignments will be given and students will print papers and check for accuracy. If students can maintain control of the keyboard without looking and maintain accuracy of lines, then students’ memory of the keyboard is building. The same format will be used when students are learning about Microsoft Word and PowerPoint programs.

Course Materials The teacher will provide to each student one three-hole, two pocket folder & one pencil to use and keep in the classroom. Students may volunteer to bring Isopropyl Alcohol cleaning wipes and/or baby wipes for the teacher to keep computers and desk area clean.
