7th and 8th Grade Course Purpose

Computer Exploration II and III - 7th & 8th Grade (Semester Class) Prerequisite – Students taking this class should have had a computer class in 6th and/or 7th grade. Keyboarding skills will help complete assignments, but keyboarding will not be taught. This semester class is designed to: (1) Review basics of Microsoft Word and use these features in projects; (2) Review basics of PowerPoint and use more slide layouts and make more presentations with Internet Research; (4) Learn basics of Excel and make spreadsheets using a variety of formulas; (5) Use the Publisher Program and make a variety of documents from templates.

Format of Class In this class, 20% of a class will be to activate students’ prior knowledge. Most students have had some type of computer class by 8th grade. I will use this time to discuss prior knowledge of these features in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher. Another 20% of the lesson will come from teacher input. Teacher input will come in the form of showing features in computer programs, discussing their use, and letting students use these features. 45% of student’s time will be hands on in using these features and completing assignment and/or projects. The final 15% of the class will be used to identify student success. This will involve teacher observation of students use of features and in seeing the final assignment and/or project and in tests.

Course Materials The teacher will provide to each student a folder and pencil to use and keep in the classroom. Students may volunteer to bring Isopropyl Alcohol cleaning wipes and/or baby wipes for the teacher to keep computers and desk area clean AND a box of Kleenex.

Classroom Expectations for the student “Ready to Learn” Classroom Procedures – Computer Class – Mrs. Hays (Chromebook usage when approved) No food or drinks or gum or phones out in the computer lab Be on time and ready to learn; listen and follow instructions When you enter class, be courteous and quiet and look on the board for instructions to start class for the day (bell work is part of your grade) Take responsibility for your own education, ask questions and ask for make-up work when you are absent Raise a hand to ask a question or to respond to a teacher’s questions (no talking across room or class disruptions) Show respect for each other and all computers/equipment (don’t play with mouse or parts of computer – take care of computers/equipment Don’t be guilty of keeping others from learning (no excessive talking, don’t lean back in chair, don’t make fun of others, don’t talk out loud to students/teachers who enter in the room

Classroom Etiquette and Procedures 1. Students are asked to listen attentively to the teacher during instructions and refrain from talking to others. Students are expected to listen and follow instructions. Talking across the room to others is not permitted. Talking, making noises, and/or laughing in an attempt to disrupt class will not be allowed. When students have question, they will raise their hands and be acknowledged by Mrs. Hays before talking. Questions should be relevant to the lesson of the day. Mrs. Hays wants the environment of her classroom to be quiet and calm so that all students have the opportunity to learn. Mrs. Hays acknowledges that in a computer class, students will be working individually at times and at other times students will help each other. We can all work together to accomplish objectives. 2. Students are expected to use time wisely in class and complete assignment for the day. Students are asked to try their best every day in class. Classroom Absences 1.

If/When a student is absent, the student will want to come in and make up the work before or after school or during lunch or advisory or tutorial time. 2. Students need to remember that anytime a student is absent (OSS, ISS, regular absence, in the office or with a counselor) the work will need to be made up at school. Try your best to be in class every day. 3. Students with perfect attendance for 9 weeks will receive SWAG card.

Discipline Each student needs to remember that all students have the right to learn. When students disrupt class, that student is keeping others from learning. When students do not respect school property, they can be keeping others from using school property. Class disruptions, TARDIES, computer misuse, Chromebook misuse, excessive talking, not doing work, chewing gum/candy/drinks, leaning back in chair, talking back to teacher or showing disrespect, and/or others will result in: (first two days of class, I will go over what I expect – this will be every student’s warning) 1st time – writing sentences – 50 times – “I need to respect Mrs. Hays’ rules for her classroom.” 2nd time – writing sentences – 100 times - “I need to respect Mrs. Hays’ rules for her classroom.” 3rd time – and others, an office write up More serious offenses like fighting, cussing, excessive property damage will result in an office write up without going through first steps. This will be the teacher’s decision.
