What does this career look like?
HOW DO I GET HERE? This occupation requires an undergraduate degree. Most Traders have a finance, business, economics or mathematics background. Energy Traders typically need five years’ of experience in financial trading, analytics or in supply chain logistics / pipeline schedulers. The ability to quickly assess all information, foresee financial opportunities and be willing to make decisions are critical to success in this role.
From commodities to cash. You buy and sell both physical and /or financial energy products to optimize your company’s financial returns. You often feel like a crystal ball. Because commodity markets can be volatile, you’re required to understand the fundamentals of supply and demand economics, the psychology of the energy markets and also your company’s production and operations. Energy prices can change often, and at times dramatically. You use reports, quality differentials trends and political news to predict where energy prices are headed in order to know whether to buy or sell.

What would I do? You wake up with the energy markets on your mind. You read news, watch weather reports and review data to understand where the energy and financial markets are headed. You use this data to make decisions about what, when and how much of a product – whether its natural gas, oil or products such as diesel, propane or butane – should be bought, sold or stored for future opportunities. You’re always look for opportunities to get the best price to make a profit for your company. Your daily activities may include: Formulating and/or validating daily forward curves for applicable markets and load the curves into a system of record. Calculating daily profit/loss statements for the portfolio. Evaluating and monitoring all trading activity and communications. Analyzing current supply and demand, logistics and quality differentials factors and applying the information to manage storage volumes to take advantage of market price differentiation opportunities. Developing hedging strategies and executing a strategy for production where appropriate.
