At the U10-12 age groups the main focus for goalkeepers should be on mastering the techniques that are introduced at GK training throughout the year. Since the position demands proficiency in such a wide variety of techniques, goalkeepers must have a desire to train and improve their skills outside of organized club and team training sessions. In the column on the left is a progression of exercises that should be performed regularly throughout the season with either a coach, another goalkeeper, or a parent or friend. In addition, below is a list of activities that a GK can perform on his/her own without the help of another GK, coach, or training partner. 1. Wall Ball GK stands 5-10 yards from a brick wall and serves the ball and collects it as it returns, using proper catching and handling techniques. Vary the serve so that the ball returns above the head, at head height, at waist height, and on the ground. Ball can be served by throwing, kicking, volleying, or half-volleying. 2. Juggling All players, GKs and field players alike, must master simple touches on the ball with their feet -- juggling is great practice for gaining comfort with the ball. Try keeping the ball up as long as possible using only your feet, but allowing 1 bounce between each touch. As soon as you lose control of the ball make a save on the ball before it bounces a second time. Also, try juggling using fists, hands, as well as your feet! 3. Footwork + Save (stationary ball) Create a short line of cones to practice footwork through, and place a ball at the end of the line. Work through the footwork line using proper technique, (athletic body shape + small quick steps) and then make a low diving save on a stationary ball. Footwork Formations: • Line
2. Zig Zag
3. Square
One-touch shots served to the middle 50% of the the goal with the inside of the foot: -ball rolled from the GK to the server -after the GK rolls the ball, she shuffles out to touch a cone and then moves to set.
