23-25 October 2015 St Stithians College The Standard Bank Africa Cycle Fair created a space where the growing cycling community could engage around the common message of cycling as a lifestyle, provide an experience for visitors and create a retail environment to showcase and sell cycling related products. HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM THE EXPOS WE CURRENTLY HAVE IN SOUTH AFRICA? The primary goal of the Standard Bank Africa Cycle Fair is to communicate the message that cycling is a lifestyle and not only a competitive sport. To speak to this we have included urban commuting interest groups, government stakeholders, advocacy groups, a mix of events, family fun-zones and more. The feedback from exhibitors has validated the decision. 94% of exhibitors in 2014 believed the Fair has a place in the the South African cycling market, and the remaining 6% were undecided. We will look to grow the event to increase the opportunities for all participants. There are a few big expos in the country that are attached to races and form part of the number pickup process. They are a great place to stock up on water bottles and energy bars for the race during a Friday lunch break. However, this is not an engaging audience with the will or interest to spend time making informed purchasing decisions, and it is no place to bring the family for an experience, nor are attendees likely to walk away with any sort of message.

Nice to see beginner cyclists coming along and also the serious snakes. I bumped into a lot of my racing mates, so it was a good cross section. Andy Coetzee, Jozi2Kozi

WHERE AND WHEN WILL IT TAKE PLACE The 2015 Standard Bank Africa Cycle Fair will move to a new venue on the edge of Africa’s economic hub – Sandton City. To align with our message of cycling as a lifestyle activity for the whole family – we have secured St Stithians College as the venue. The timing of the event is to take advantage of: •The great Gauteng weather •The timing of new product releases for 2015 (off the back of large northern hemisphere fairs) •The community is training for the 94.7, the Double Century and numerous multi-day MTB races •Purchasing decisions are being made by families for Christmas, and by cyclists for the new season. Furthermore there will be numerous quality food vendors and craft liquor merchants on site to keep the community fed and watered. The Sanlam Investments HandmadeContemporary Fair is one of our primary events, and as such we have access to some of the best food and drink in the country. The dedicated kids cycle park will be fully equipped and manned so that parents can bring their kids to ride safely while they enjoy the Fair.

WILL STOCK BE FOR SALE AT THE AFRICA CYCLE FAIR? Yes it will. We have learnt at our Fairs that our audience attend our fairs for three reasons; to be informed, to be entertained and finally to shop. However, some distributors maintain their right not to directly sell to the public, and we respect each and every business’s decision. As examples of our other Fairs: • FNB Joburg Art Fair: an audience of 10 000 people purchase close to R20 million worth of art over the weekend. • Sanlam Investments HandMadeContemporary Fair: all our exhibitors make a profit on their costs. • Winter Sculpture Fair: visitor tickets were sold out in advance, and half of the vendors were completely sold out. 2015 Last year, Artlogic initiated a new special project called the Best Bike in Africa. It gave the opportunity for distributors and manufacturers to put their best mountain bike forward, and see how they fared in a public voting environment. The simple rules were: • Only mountain bikes • The bike must be available to buy in South Africa • Retail price must be under R75,000. (US$7,000) In 2014 the winner of the Best Bike in Africa was a PYGA Pascoe ONEFOURTY650 designed and distributed by local legend Patrick Morewood. And for the public, at the end of the weekend one lucky member rode away with a brand new winning PYGA Pascoe. This year, the Best Bike in Africa returns and we hope to see more great bikes on display. The rules and adjudicating process has not changed significantly and full details available on request.

ARTLOGIC AND THE FAIR Artlogic is in the business of building and managing curated fairs. With the FNB Joburg Art Fair, The Sanlam Investments HandMadeContemporary Fair, The Winter Sculpture and the Standard Bank Africa Cycle Fair, Artlogic is perfectly positioned to deliver high-end curated fairs. When we talk about a ‘curated fair’ we mean that exhibitors are carefully chosen to encourage engagement and dialogue between the exhibitors and visitors. Most fairs sell space to any exhibitor willing to pay the rent and very quickly end up with a generic show that fails to attract the right LSM. Cycling, like Art, needs a high LSM in order to get the right sales. For this reason, it is crucial that the Fair is created with this audience and their family in mind. With 10 000 Joburg visitors regularly attending each of our events, Artlogic knows how to build a Fair to attract, entertain and promote sales to this audience.

Thanks for arranging this. On behalf of the team we thoroughly enjoyed the interaction. Well done on a brilliant event. Douglas Ryder Team Principal – Team MTN-Qhubeka

What I loved about the fair is that is was about a lifestyle and not what cycling has turned into, mostly an image of carbon and lycra. The uni community loved the fair. Donna Kisogloo, Oddwheel Unicycle
