Judge’s Statement Betsy Bannan Fine Arts Instructor, Virginia Tech It was a pleasure to judge Expressions 2015 at Piedmont Arts. As I reviewed the works and made the difficult choices, I looked for strong technical skill, originality of subject matter, ambition, and sensitivity to materials as opposed to an overall thematic approach. I also looked for evidence of the artists’ commitment to their work and complete engagement with their processes. It is exciting to see such a vibrant art community in Martinsville and the surrounding areas. The range of media and subject matter is particularly impressive. It is also encouraging to see strong student work and support for young people making art. Their participation in the show along with the larger art community gives a fresh and rich experience for the viewers. Congratulations to all artist participants and to Lynwood Artists and Piedmont Arts for supporting and mounting such a show.
