Zero in on the elements that define glamorous for you: Lacquer, tufting, suede, gold/ silver leafing, varnish, chandeliers, etc. Now that you have identified elements, identify what works for you. For example, a plush, large over sized sofa in slate grey or even a vintage chesterfield sofa with gold tufted details will look elegant yet luxe. You can drape a cashmere shawl as a throw on it. The centre table can be made from mahogany, walnut or even mirrored glass with gilded legs.

A big, ornate, mirror in hallway will not only elongate it but also spell luxury at your doorstep. A large carpet can help tie various furniture elements together. Not to mention, its soft feel for your feet to rest on. Introduce a crystal chandelier. You can even hang it low over your side table for added drama.

Rohina’s Living Room

Mix and match, let it look effortless. Pair vintage with contemporary; shabby with pristine.

cushion. It’s criminal to go bland and solid with all of your cushions this season.

Pile up coffee table books, it gives the un-orderly vibe but still looks impeccable.

Textures – a lot of them! Think of a laser cut rug on the floor, slub chenille as your fabric base.

Paint or wallpaper. Its amazing what one accent wall can do to a room.

Think opposites when you’re decorating – pair different chairs instead of buying a matching set; go shabby chic with a jute fabric on your couch and amp up the luxury quotient with silk cushions.

Load up on rugs, especially if you’re not in love with the flooring... rugs are a sure shot way of injecting your own personality into your space.

Piping - nothing livens up a piece quite like contrasting piping on your upholstery.

Mirrors are a must-have – a gilded, ceiling-high mirror is a game-changer.

Have a pleasant smell greet guests (and yourself!) and you’ll have a home that not only smells fabulous but feels fabulous too. Reed diffusers are a favorite as they are less of a hazard than candles.

Statement cushions – whether it’s the face of a Great Dane, a possum or just an appliqued quote 4

HOT TIPS LIVE IT UP Know what you want your space to look like but don’t know where to start? Fret not. We got three of the industry experts to share with you quick tips to help you achieve the space you dream of!

THE LOOK: CLASSIC CONTEMPORARY WHAT: A mix of clean contemporary lines with elements borrowed from older classical styles. WHO: RAKESHH JESWAANI, Principal, Rakeshh Jeswaani Interior Architects

TOP TIPS: FLOOR & WALLS

ART & ARTEFACTS

Keep the flooring neutral. Avoid motifs or borders, Focus on textures, simple patterned rugs in the seating area. A wooden floor also works well with this look. Light taupe or grey walls can add warmth to the space. You can also use wallpaper, either as a highlighter on one wall or all over in a very subtle weave.

A room without art is like a body without a soul! Abstract paintings – landscapes or figurative work best here. If you have a large canvas on one wall, try a cluster of smaller drawings or paintings on another wall. Don’t use very bright pop art. Sculptures add a lot of interest to a room. It could be one large piece in a place of prominence, or smaller pieces on a console or a side table.

FURNITURE

CURTAINS, UPHOLSTERY & RUGS

Work with classical accents. Sofas should be plush and upholstered in soft colours; off white, taupe or grey with maybe a self -weave or stripe will work best. Don’t be afraid to mix textures, though, as that creates interesting layers and adds richness to the space. Add accents like contrast piping or button work. Finishes should ideally be in a dark polish like walnut or dark teak.

While the Roman blinds do give a smart, chic look, pleated curtains are more practical if they need to be used frequently. Use solid colours in natural weaves like silk or linen. For the upholstery, go for fabrics that look natural and have interesting texture. Rugs are very important so make sure you have at least one nice rug under the centre table. This can be plain or textured, but keep the colour of the rug in slight contrast to the floor and the sofa. You can also use Kashmiri and oriental rugs or Kilims.

LIGHTING Table lamps and uplighters create a nice, soft glow. A chandelier is a great option if you have a high ceiling. 6

THE LOOK: MODERN WHAT: It is simple, clean and minimalist with limited avant-garde furniture pieces as focal points. WHO: LALITA THARANI & MUJIB AHMED, Co-Founders & Principal Architects, Collaborative Architecture

TOP TIPS: COLOUR Choose an overall muted colour scheme, playing with different neutral shades and tones. Ideally an all white space works best with one accent colour. LIGHT Use light as a material, be innovative. Incorporate fixtures to act as art pieces and not just sources of light. Don’t over light the space, aim at striking a good balance. TEXTURES Avoid heavy textures. Opt for lighter fabrics such as cotton silks, avoid jacquards. Drape windows in sheers without heavy, blackout drapes. Avoid busy wallpapers. FINISHERS Personalize the space, with things that matter to you, be it art, books or cushions but bear in mind to not over crowd the space what really completes a space is the people who occupy it!

THE LOOK: CONTEMPORARY WHAT: It is warm, urban, uncluttered. WHO: ARCHANA BAID, Principal Designer, And Design Co

TOP TIPS: ELEMENTS Pair relaxing neutrals with accent pieces. It’s all about creating a warm lived-in feel with a hint of luxe. Introduce layers, work with burnished finishes and de-clutter for an airy, contemporary look.

COLOURS AND PATTERNS

Keep the arrangement casual. You can use the window drapes to create interest, through printed panels. A large, plush sofa is a great start point for your furniture layout. You can even add different types of lounge chairs on either side of the sofa, or mix it up with a small bench. Think cozy conversations!

Play with undertones, where sand shade walls highlight steel grey-beige leather sectionals or go with bold hues, like charcoal or chocolate brown. Juxtapose geometric fabrics with clean lines. Use hints of gold to make the space look chic. 7
