Smart Objectives Limited Established in May 2008, Smart Objectives Limited provides inspirational facilitation and training programmes that challenge and stimulate positive action from people. Our approach centres on the philosophy that people create success. Combined, we have over 25 years experience as facilitators and trainers, and we can work with all types of stakeholder groups; whether it is your workforce, board of directors, senior management and project teams, or stakeholder groups. We have also delivered workshops for private, public, social and charitable organisation. Our sessions are always fun and lively. We design and facilitate business sessions for corporate/annual conferences, focus groups and business partnering workshops. We also design and facilitate a variety of business and fun away-days. Smart Objectives is a UK based organisation. We have delivered workshops and training sessions all over the country. We regularly work in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, North Wales, Derby, Manchester, Leeds, Coventry, Birmingham, London and the Home Counties. Workshop Case Study – Quadrant 3 Project Review Workshop The Project and Team Canute Simpson from Smart Objectives facilitated the Quadrant 3 project team away day workshop. The workshop brought together members from the design team (Architects, Structural Engineers, Mechanical Engineers) including the Cost Managers, Clients and Construction Managers, for a one day event held in Goodwood, Chichester. The evening before – percussion workshop…Fun!

The Workshop

The project team lead by Stanhope and Sir Robert McAlpine, is currently working on the Crown Estate’s initiative to transform the south end of Regent Street.

For the management it was important that the team focus over the next six months to ensure that the designs are delivered to support project procurement and construction. The workshop aimed to: 

facilitate an environment where the project team can engage with the culture and ethos of project, helping them to understand how to work “the Stanhope and McAlpine Way”



to reinforce the camaraderie and the relationships between team members, so that they can fully understand each others roles and responsibilities



raise awareness of critical project activities, so that the entire design team can fully understands what needs to happen over the next 6 months



provide and environment where the project team can learn and share best practice

Denbighshire County Council is investing to sustain high standards of educational attainment to meet the needs of pupils, the wider community and the economy. In order to achieve this, the maintenance programme for schools delivers important improvements in areas where needed. The Workshop: Smart Objectives facilitated a workshop with Denbighshire County Council (maintenance team) and five school representatives (mainly head teachers), at County Hall, Ruthin. Workshop objectives: 

The aim of the workshop was to carry out a strategic review of the schools maintenance programme and agree a set of actions to improve the service delivery.

Case Study – Sovereign Development Consortium – Bristol The Client The Framework Contractor Selection Planning Meeting for Sovereign Development Consortium took place on at the Sovereign Housing Group’s offices in Newbury.

The workshop: The following objectives were agreed for this workshop: 

Bring together client members of the consortium, so that they can review the existing framework and agree a new strategy for 2010 onwards.



Provide an environment where delegates can positively discuss ways of improving the effectiveness of the contractor framework.



Facilitate the discussion around the contractor selection criteria, so that this information can be used to create the framework strategy and the PQQ.



Provide an environment where the team members can support and challenge the behaviours and culture within the framework.

This workshop brought together representatives from Sovereign Housing Association, The Vale Housing Association, Housing Solutions Group, Cottsway Housing Association, Twynham Housing Association, Solon South West Housing Association Limited and Ability Housing Association, with the aim of reviewing the existing framework and agreeing a new way forward. The existing contractor framework is due for renewal and this meeting was designed to set out a new strategy for the development and delivery of the new contractor selection and framework.

Case Study – Derby Homes Workshop (Responsive Maintenance Partnering Contract) The Client In April 2002, the responsibility for managing council homes in Derby moved from Derby City Council over to Derby Homes, along with over 300 staff from the then Council's Housing Services Department.

Derby Homes Limited is an arm's length management organisation – ALMO created by Derby City Council to manage, maintain and improve its council houses and estates.

Smart Objectives delivered a series of OpenspaceTM and project review workshops for Derby Homes, at the Rolls-Royce Leisure Association building in Derby. The workshops brought together delegates from Derby Homes, Derby City Council, the community and partner contracting organisations that are all part of the Derby Homes Responsive Maintenance Partnering Contract. The Derby Homes Maintenance Programme works throughout the city of Derby and is responsible for the programme of regular maintenance to tenants’ homes to maintain and improve living standards.

Workshop Case Study – Wales Low Zero Carbon Hub Workshop

The Client

The Wales Low Zero Carbon Hub is a coalition that is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government, the building industry, housing and voluntary sectors in Wales. The hub’s aim is to help the Welsh Assembly meet its target to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by three per cent a year from 2011, by making new buildings zero carbon from 2011. Canute Simpson (Smart Objectives Limited) facilitated the Wales Low Zero Carbon Hub Workshop on 15 July 2009 at the St David's Hotel & Spa in Cardiff. Workshop objectives:

To facilitate an environment where stakeholders and representatives, can understand what has been happening across all the partner organisations in Wales, regarding the Low/Zero Carbon agenda.



To help stakeholders and representatives share best practice and ideas about what the hub should do.

To create an action plan, to help the board of the Wales Low Zero Carbon Hub manage its short term objectives.

Case Study – South West London Public Health – Strategic Workshop

The Workshop: The Strengthening commissioning in South West London workshop took place at the Odeon Cinema, Kingston. The workshop brought together representatives from 5 Primary Care Trusts (PCT) in the South West London (SWL) region (Richmond and Twickenham, Wandsworth, Sutton and Merton, Kingston and Croydon).

Prior to the Strengthening Commissioning Workshop Jonathan Hilderbrand, Lavia Royle, Michelle King and Canute Simpson (Facilitator), met to discuss the workshop objectives and design. Because of the nature of this workshop we decided to facilitate certain sessions using e-voting equipment. Each delegate was given their own personal handset to use for the day. We were able to profile delegates’ views on a variety of issues and then analyse the information to understand trends and the perceptions for different stakeholder groups. This is a fantastic way of capturing perceptions anonymously.

Case Study – Network Rail “Making a Difference"(MAD) UK National Programme

The Programme Smart Objectives delivered a series of workshops with contractors from Network Rail’s Track Renewal Team. These workshops formed part of Network Rail’s strategy for improving the behaviours of track workers on site and served as an introduction to behavioural change. The workshops are lively and engaging. Delegates explored the causes of track side accidents, discovered how the mind works, and learnt how to influence attitudes and behaviours.

Delegates were able to volunteer to undergo additional training to become a Making a Difference coach. The aim of the change programme was to : 

raise awareness of behavioural safety within Network Rail’s management, projects, project teams and the supply chain
