RLE Leadership Team Expectations of Student Staff Resources:
Materials Needed:
Outline: Note: This outline is intended as a guide. Feel free to add, subtract, or re-arrange topics based on the needs of your staff/area. Please note that some of these topics may be discussed by the professional staff member in your area. 1. The Lifestyle/Role Modeling a. The importance of role modeling – Staff are role models no matter where they go (on or off-campus). You are also a member of the DOHRE wherever you go (including online & social networking) – you can’t just turn your back and say “that’s not my job” since you are not on your floor, not on-call, not in an area, etc. b. Discuss the fish bowl and how their role plays into the bigger department picture c. Access to confidential information & keys i. As a staff member, you will have access to confidential information (UFID numbers, addresses, room assignments, etc). It is very important that you use this information only for its intended purpose. Improper use of information could result in termination. ii. Keys – Staff have access to master keys (electronic or hard key) for specific job functions. . This is very important. Keys will probably also be covered by your area professional staff, but a note about them here will be helpful. d. Administrative items i. Weekends away – Staff allowed two weekends away per month. Explain request/approval process to your staff (you may need to check with your professional staff member for your specific area policy). ii. Alcohol & staff – Staff who are 21 are allowed to drink, on or off campus. Staff who are not 21 are not (this would be against the law). Staff may not provide alcohol for students/friends under the age of 21 (also against the law). There are some important ethical questions about alcohol consumption you may want to discuss. Alcohol may be another issue your area professional staff covers with the Staffs. 2. Time Management a. Discussion around the added impacts the job brings to one’s time. Tips on how best to manage these impacts. Discussion about outside employment and organizations.
