Roxy came into the shelter because a family lost their home abandoning their pets. Once in the shelter she gave birth to the kittens. To get them out the stressful shelter environment, Stephanie is fostering them until they are old enough to be adopted and go to their forever home. Harper – the seal point kitty was cleverly named after the Harp Seal. Since coming to Stephanie, their health has improved immensely thanks to Dr. Williamson. These little tykes are growing so fast. Eyes are now completely open and they are beginning to eat solid foods, no more bottle feeding. Fostering in an excellent way to volunteer, but it can be very time consuming. So make sure you are able to make the commitment before you decide to foster.

Recycle Cell Phones Just a Thought

"The reason I love the sea I cannot explain -- it's physical. When you dive you begin to feel like an angel. It's a liberation of your weight." - Jacques-Yves Cousteau

Make a difference for the environment and animals with your old Cell phone. Cell phones contain toxic metals that can pollute the environment. According to Parade magazine, if people recycled their old handsets, it would reduce hazardous waste in our landfills and save enough to

power more than 18,500 homes for a year. That’s a lot of energy. It’s so easy, yet only 10% of the 140 million phones upgraded get recycled each year. Help us make a difference by recycling. Send us those old cell phones hiding in back of your closets or drawers. We’ll put them all together and send them in for recycling. Money

received from their recycling will go to helping animals in need. Animals and mother earth will thank you. Make everyday earth day!

How smart are manatees? True, manatees have small brains, but just because manatees do not prey on other animals or have a complex social network like dolphins does not mean they are not intelligent. Manatees do not have the need to evolve to escape predators which explains why they are content swimming and eating. Although their brains

are smooth, in recent studies they have been able to know which speaker the noise is coming out of. This does not explain why they are hit by boats if they can hear them. Unlike humans which have the predominant sense of vision, manatees use their senses of touch and hearing, making us wonder if we really understand their world.

See who is making a difference! Meet Jordan from Italy, she is the newest member of Kids Making A Difference. Jordan has always had a love for animals and in her senior year in high school she put that love to work. What started out as a graduation requirement turned into a life’s passion. During that year Jordan has raised $500 for the Humane Society to support efforts in the stop of the Canadian seal hunt and raised $200 which she donated to a local animal shelter. Jordan tells us the last two years of her life have been all about the animals; taking an online course through the Humane Society and writing letters to legislatures to be a voice for the animals. One of Jordan’s bigger projects was helping rescued seals.

Jordan was fortunate to get a volunteer internship at Ireland’s only marine mammal rehabilitation center, the Irish Seal Sanctuary. This busy sanctuary has on average 75 seals rescued and released each year along with sea birds and other wild animals. The sanctuary is completely run by volunteers and runs on donations. At the seal sanctuary “everyday was something new and there was never a dull moment” says Jordan. At the sanctuary Jordan took care of seals that were blind, mentally disabled, entangled in fishing line and some covered in oil. Before the internship was over, Jordan left her mark by creating the Irish Seal Sanctuary's Seal Adoption Program. Now every seal admitted has a chance to be

“adopted” online. Adopters receive a certificate, photo, story, and a seal plush toy along with a monthly newsletter update via email. You can even watch your seal be released back into the wild on YouTube. For more information check out www.irishsealsantuary.ie. Today, Jordan is on the Teen Advisory Board for the Humane Society and is looking forward to starting her first semester of college in a few weeks. Jordan says she will continue her education and efforts and “never rest until all animals are treated equally.” Now that is making a difference!
