Retreating at Manitoqua Looking for a place to begin planning for next year? Need to “rally the troops” to get your employees/staff behind your mission and vision statement? How about working through the upcoming calendar year of events? Want to simply get away and spend time getting refreshed and rejuvenated to excel in the next season of work, ministry, or life in general? Let us serve you by helping plan your lodging, meals, and other accommodations. If you are looking for a more intimate space that sleeps twenty-four people and has a large meeting room attached to your sleeping rooms, consider staying in the Oaks building. This is an ideal location for a small group of people to gather and plug through the agenda for the day while enjoying the view of our peaceful oak trees through the windows. Maybe you are looking to bring a larger group and need breakout rooms for different groups, ministries, areas to discuss things together? Consider the ARC (Adult Retreat Center) which is equipped with nineteen rooms (private bath) and houses up to thirty-six people, three comfortable meeting rooms downstairs, wifi, and a dining room on the main floor with the sleeping rooms. No matter the occasion, let us serve your retreats’ needs. You can begin planning your retreat and working with our guest services coordinator to take care of your needs by heading over to manitoqua.org/planretreat to start the process!

New Guest Services Coordinator This summer we had the pleasure of hiring Ken Wojnarowski, a former program assistant here at Camp, to the position of Guest Services Coordinator. He is anticipating the opportunity to connect with new guests, work with hosts to take care of groups and to continue being a part of this team here at Camp Manitoqua.

If you have any questions about planning your next outing here at Camp Manitoqua, please feel to contact Ken at free [email protected] or call the office!

More Than Just An Intern… by Laura Vroom

Our 2015 summer camp season has come to an end and it was a phenomenal year, but many people think that is all that Camp Manitoqua does… just summer camp. Our “off season” really is not off in any way whatsoever! In fact, Manitoqua services more people during the off seasons than during the three months of summer camp. However, over the course of the remaining nine months of the ministry year we serve over 17,500 guests. Running a full-time, round the calendar year para-church ministry requires a tremendous amount of work. We need ongoing staffing to help facilitate this kind of exciting ministry, but not just any kind of help. One of our desires as a ministry is to not only hire quality staff, but to develop the next generation of leaders who will share our same convictions regarding the ministry that we are called to do. Out of that desire, we have started an internship program.

Over the years, one of the things that our permanent staff began to notice was that there were many ministry-minded college students who were graduating with degrees in hand but were very unclear as to what God wanted them to do in the next chapter of life. So, in 2007 we started an internship program for people who have recently graduated college and are in need of a year of discipleship and ministry work or students who are still in school and are willing to take a year off of school to confirm they are on the right track. The internship program permits interns to get a look behind the curtain of ministry to more fully understand what full-time vocational ministry looks like, get trained up, receive much needed experience, and be discipled by our staff. What do they do? Great question! They host retreat groups, take on leadership roles for summer camp, become ropes course facilitators, shovel snow, do housekeeping, answer phones and learn how to register campers. They are active in every area of our camp. On top of all that, they are giving a biblical foundation for ministry through mentorship and weekly Bible study. Camp Manitoqua has always been a place of training and raising up leaders. Many of our staff have moved on to lead churches as pastors, children’s ministry or worship leaders, principals in schools and to be phenomenal ministry-minded individuals who have a heart for the gospel. They are impacting the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ! This is another great ministry that Manitoqua has which intentionally trains people up for His kingdom. Because of your faithful support, this kind of program can happen!

Jess Jensen (’07-’08)

Assistant Director of Children’s Ministry Christ Community Church in Ames, Iowa Eight years ago, as a new graduate from Iowa State and jobless, I gladly stepped into being one of Camp Manitoqua’s interns. Summer hype transitioned into fall retreats. Little did I know God would take my heart through a retreat, filled with preparation for my next season. Each day’s new to-do list gave me the opportunity to lay down my agenda and serve. What I perceived as “washing the feet” of camp, God flipped upside down to show me He was washing my feet. He taught me He’s more concerned about my heart condition than what I “accomplish” for Him, a foundational truth I stand on as I get the privilege of shepherding children every Sunday.

Bryce Van Deraa (’12-’13) Resident Pastor The Journey Church in St. Louis, Missouri

As I think back on my internship it was a forming, meaningful, and equipping year in my life. I originally wanted to do the internship to see what camp ministry was like all year round rather than just in the summer. I had worked on summer staff for 5 summers and held a different role every summer so I had a good idea about how Manitoqua does summer camp. However, the other nine months were a mystery to me. To say the least it was an extremely diverse and well-rounded year. This was shaping for me because I learned from a team of people that was willing to do whatever it took to make camp more affective for the Kingdom of God. I also learned a lot about myself and how my faith overflows into my work. As an internship team, we were led through the study of a few different books for our spiritual development. One of those books was on living a Christ centered life. It was awesome because the focus of our internship was not just the work we were doing but about who we are in Christ and our spiritual development. One thing that I will always take with me from my Manitoqua internship is that it is always more than the work you are doing on any given day. It is about the God you serve, the people you serve with, and the impact that a group of people devoted to Christ can have on the people that come across their path. It is a devastating blow to the kingdom of darkness when a group of regular folks stand united in Christ and proclaim Jesus as King through word and deed to the thousands of children and adults that come onto those grounds. Learning and participating in that environment of ministry has influenced how I work, do ministry, and lead my family. It was truly an amazing year and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

RECAPPING CAMP

by the numbers…

We are humbled and overwhelmed at what the Lord has done through the ministry of Camp Manitoqua this year. We wanted to rejoice and celebrate what God has done and convey that using the images and numbers you see below. We understand that ministry and the work of the Holy Spirit is not all about numbers, but these numbers help show tangible fruit of what God is doing through His Kingdom here at Camp Manitoqua. To God be the Glory for the following:

Alumni Weekend On July 25, 2015 we had the privilege of hosting 150 former summer staff for our Alumni Weekend. It was a great day reconnecting with one another, grilling up burgers and brats, swimming in the pool, giving tours of grounds, and ending our time in gathered worship. Words cannot express the range of emotions people went through as they stepped back on our grounds for the first time in a long time. Former summer staff exchanged past camper/staff memories, shared their best and worst moments while on staff, and ultimately boasted about God who worked so powerfully in and through each staff member.

Closing Remarks: Joe Paglia (Board President) The following article is a slightly edited version of closing remarks given at the Summer Staff Reunion on July 25th. They are surely as true for all alumni reading this newsletter as they are for those sweated through worship in the chapel that hot summer evening… My name is Joe Paglia and I love Camp Manitoqua! My relationship with Camp began in July 1983, when I spent my first week in ‘Cabin B’ as a third grader. Since then, I do not remember a single summer when I missed being on campus in one-way or another. Whether as a camper, a SAM, a Summer Counselor, my own Wedding Rehearsal Dinner, Ropes Course Facilitator, Summer Staff Instructor, or as a member of the Board of Directors, I love being at camp. I love Camp Manitoqua and I would bet that all of us here in this room have similar feelings. Many of us met Christ here. Many of us can’t even begin to imagine our lives without Camp Manitoqua. We can’t even begin to fathom who we would be were it not for Camp. As I look around the room, many of us sitting here worked on staff together. At the same, many of us can also point to people in this room we had as counselors. You see, this room is filled with generations. Generations of staff, generations of Christ’s servants, who lived and breathed the glory of our Savior into the lives of our campers and into the lives of one another.

As I considered such things in anticipation of our time together, I was reminded of Psalm 89: I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations (ESV). Who was it that had such an impact upon you? What was the name of that counselor who made you want to be a counselor? I know you know the name… who was it? As you consider this question, do any of you recognize the following names: Joseph Biegel, Sr., John Hoekstra, Richard Rietveld, Lester C. White, Egbert Heerema, George Slager, Peter Koopmans, Clarence Smit, John Spoolstra, Henry Tyssen, Jacob De Vries, Andrew Witvoet. These twelve men began the generations of Manitoqua. On the 15th of December, 1954, they demonstrated divine wisdom, evangelistic vision, and godly servanthood, as together they incorporated an organization that would one day become known as Manitoqua Ministries. Since that day, 61 years ago, generation after generation after generation have sung the praises of God in this place. Since that day, generation after generation after generation have proclaimed the faithfulness, love, mercy, and glory of God in Christ to countless kids and their families!

And these generations continue on even today. Manitoqua remains committed to serving its campers and their families by praising God and proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ. Camp may look a bit different. The counselors this year may look a little different than your own summer staff did. And the campers probably even look different. But there is one thing that remains the same: the heart of this Camp for Christ and His glory in the lives of kids! You were part of that legacy and we want you to continue to be part of it. For many of us, our days as counselors have passed us by. But there are still ways to build into the legacy: • Pray – have you ever considered being a prayer partner for summer staff? What about permanent staff? Have you ever considered praying year round for Camp, not just when our summer camp is in session? This may surprise you but we bring 4 times as many people across this campus during retreat season than we do during summer! • Support – For those of you who support Camp financially, thank you. For those of you who don’t, would you consider giving towards the work of Manitoqua? Our budget this year will be just shy of $2 million, and a significant portion of that budget comes from friends, supporters, and partners like you. • Serve – Camp could not continue to run without our volunteers. This is not to say we do not have a great staff, we do. Our staff is fantastic. However, Camp also needs people who will give their time and talents to see the Gospel of Jesus Christ proclaimed in this place!
